Wall Street Journal Editorial Board: Confirm Brett Kavanaugh

Wall Street Journal Editorial Board: Confirm Brett Kavanaugh

“Judge Kavanaugh was right to call the confirmation process a ‘disgrace’ in his passionate self-defense,” The Wall Street Journal editorial board writes. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s “allegation should have been vetted privately, in confidence, as she said she would have preferred. Instead ranking Democrat Dianne Feinstein held it for six weeks and it was leaked—perhaps to cause precisely such a hearing circus.”

“Average premiums for key Obamacare benchmark plans are set to drop for the first time in the program’s history, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said Thursday,” Tom Howell Jr. writes in
The Washington Times. Mr. Azar went out of his way to blast the idea — often dubbed ‘Medicare for all’ — in his speech Thursday. He said it would force taxpayers to foot its ‘staggering costs,’ undercut public insurance for seniors and amplify one of the 2010 Affordable Care Act’s noted foibles.”

L. Todd Wood writes in The Washington Times that “with the election of President Trump and the consequent shift to an American foreign policy of strength and forcefulness after the disastrously indecisive Obama years, the situation on the ground and in the skies above Syria has dramatically changed. And it is Israel that is coming out on top.”

“The best war is the one not fought,” Ronald Reagan famously said. “Israel’s obvious dominance in the region will go a long way to making that statement ring true,” Wood argues.

“The U.S. economy grew as expected in the second quarter, according to a reading Thursday that confirmed that gross domestic product rose at its quickest rate in nearly four years,” Jeff Cox reports for
CNBC. “GDP, the broadest measure of how the economy is progressing, increased 4.2 percent, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis reported, the same as expected from economists surveyed by Thomson Reuters. It was the fastest pace since the third quarter of 2014.”

“A drug sting lead by Interior Department law enforcement officers this week resulted in the arrest of 75 individuals and the seizure of 248 pounds of heroin, methamphetamine, fentanyl and marijuana on Indian land,” Miranda Green writes in The Hill. “The operation, conducted over the course of several months in North Carolina is part of the administration’s push to thwart the opioid drug trade, an effort that’s been called the President’s Joint Opioid Reduction Task Force.”

Ending ‘the war against business’

Ending ‘the war against business’

Today, senior Trump Administration officials hosted a White House Economic Summit for an audience of America’s small business owners. A lot has changed under President Donald J. Trump’s economic policies, and today’s summit offered an important reminder of the positive effects those policies have had on America’s job creators.

The U.S. economy is booming and confidence is soaring. Between the President’s strong regulatory reform agenda, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and investment in America’s workforce, a sluggish economy has been revived. In fact, according to CNBC, 54 percent of Americans now rate the economy as good or excellent—the highest ever recorded.

Small business optimism is on the rise as well, hitting a 35-year high, according to the National Federation of Independent Business. And the confidence job creators have in this economy has translated into higher pay for America’s workers. In the past year, U.S. workers saw the largest pay increase in nearly a decade, the Bureau of Economic Analysis reports.

With the economy booming and America open for business, the evidence is clear: President Trump’s policies will continue to drive true American prosperity. “We have had better growth, we have had tremendous job creation, lower unemployment across the board,” Director of the National Economic Council Larry Kudlow said today.

Building a better world for female entrepreneurs

While in New York for the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Advisor to the President Ivanka Trump took some time to focus on a message central to her work in the White House: economic empowerment for women across the globe.

“We know that investing in women is a priority in terms of our global security, in terms global prosperity, in terms of global peace. We also know that women around the world are one of the greatest under-tapped resources. When you invest in women, they invest back into their communities, they can invest back into their families, they invest in things that have a generational impact on their societies,” Ms. Trump said.

“At #UNGA 2018, I had the honor of joining @WorldBank @JimYongKim, @ConcordiaSummit + global leaders for impactful discussions on #WomensEconomicEmpowerment in furtherance of @POTUS’s National Security Strategy, as we strive for peace, prosperity & stability at home & abroad,” she tweeted.

How Trump Rescued Our Economy From Obama’s ‘New Normal’

How Trump Rescued Our Economy From Obama’s ‘New Normal’
“It’s hard to believe that just two short years ago, our economy was limping along with no sign of a massive boom around the corner. Beyond any shadow of a doubt, the pivotal factor in the last two years has been President Donald Trump,” Michael Busler writes in The Daily Signal.

Growth under President Trump has “driven down underemployment, increased the proportion of Americans in the labor force, increased the number of part-time employees finding full-time work, boosted wages, and reduced the unemployment rate overall. This all will lead to ever higher incomes for families. The real median income is set to hit a record level by the end of 2018.”

“President Trump and Japan Foreign Minister Shinzo Abe agreed Wednesday to negotiate a new trade deal between the two countries. A centerpiece of the proposed deal would be increased U.S. car sales in Japan and Japanese agriculture sales in the U.S.,” S.A. Miller writes in The Washington Times. “It can only be better for the United States. It couldn’t get any worse than what has happened over the years,” the President said.

“Over the first two years of his administration, President Trump has prioritized policies that promote American competitiveness and U.S. interests in trade deals as well as focus on lowering the cost of healthcare and the price of medicines,” Grover Norquist and Alex Hendrie write in the Washington Examiner. “Just 100 days since the administration rolled out their drug pricing plan, at least 15 manufacturers have committed to lowering drug prices. In this time period, there have been 60 percent fewer price increases, and 54 percent more price decreases.”

In
Fox News, Rep. Jim Renacci (R-OH) writes that it is abundantly clear that President Trump’s tax cuts are working. “The U.S. is the largest economy in the world and is getting stronger every day thanks to the leadership of President Trump,” Rep. Renacci concludes

“First Lady Melania Trump announced she’ll be visiting four ‘beautiful and very different’ countries when she travels to Africa next month on her first major solo trip abroad,” Caitlin Yilek reports in the
Washington Examiner. “This will be my first time traveling to Africa and I am excited to educate myself on the issues facing children throughout the continent, while also learning about its rich culture and history,” the First Lady said.

President Trump Addresses U.N. General Assembly: We Choose ‘Independence’ Over ‘Global Governance’
“President Donald Trump spoke about globalism and national sovereignty in a speech before the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, telling the body that ‘America will always choose independence and cooperation over global governance, control and domination,’” Jeffrey Cimmino writes in The Washington Free Beacon.
“I honor the right of every nation in this room to pursue its own customs, beliefs and traditions. The United States will not tell you how to live, work or worship. We only ask that you honor our sovereignty in return,” President Trump said.

“U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley charged Wednesday that former Secretary of State John Kerry's ongoing talks with Iran are ‘anti-American,’” as they undermine U.S. diplomacy, Pete Kasperowicz reports in the Washington Examiner. “What Secretary Kerry did was not only disrespectful, it was hurtful to America,” Ambassador Haley said

“Consumer confidence rose in September, notching its highest level in about 18 years. The Consumer Board’s index rose to 138.4 this month from 134.7 in August,” Fred Imbert reports for CNBC. “Consumers’ assessment of current conditions remains extremely favorable, bolstered by a strong economy and robust job growth,” said Lynn Franco, the Conference Board’s director of economic indicators.

The Investor’s Business Daily editorial board points out that the U.S. economy is booming and pulling ahead from the rest of the world, according to CNBC’s Global CFO Council survey. “Remember when everybody said that the ‘unexpectedly’ strong economy under President Trump had nothing to do with his policies? He was just lucky because the global economy was booming, they said. Well, that attempt to dismiss the Trump boom just fell by the wayside.”

“The United States imposed new sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s wife and several of his top allies on Tuesday as U.S. President Donald Trump urged members of the United Nations to support a ‘restoration of democracy’ in the once-booming OPEC nation,” Lesley Wroughton and Brian Ellsworth report for Reuters. “The move adds pressure to a government already widely criticized for economic collapse and undermining democracy.”

President Trump returns to the United Nations

The White House to you
Thursday, September 27, 2018

1600 daily

President Trump returns to the United Nations
“Each of us here today is the emissary of a distinct culture, a rich history, and a people bound together by ties of memory, tradition, and the values that make our homelands like nowhere else on Earth,” President Donald J. Trump said in a major speech at the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today.

“That is why America will always choose independence and cooperation over global governance, control, and domination.”

Last year in New York, President Trump outlined a vision at the U.N. of strong, sovereign nations working together to confront the biggest scourges facing Western civilization in the 21st century. He cited three threats in particular—North Korea, Iran, and ISIS—that required decisive action in the months ahead.

One year later, bold American diplomacy has diminished each of these threats:
  • The historic Singapore Summit with North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-Un marked the first-ever face-to-face meeting between a U.S. President and a North Korean head of state. At the summit, the two leaders committed to the complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Just last week, leaders from North and South Korea and began drafting a plan to achieve that vision.
  • When President Trump took office, ISIS represented one of the biggest threats to the world. By changing the rules of engagement on the ground, President Trump empowered U.S. commanders with broader authority to eradicate the terrorist network. That strategy paid dividends: With the help of our allies, all Iraqi territory has been liberated from ISIS control.
  • On Iran, President Trump used last year’s UNGA speech to reiterate his profound objections to a nuclear deal that put the interests of diplomats ahead of the Iranian people—and, indeed, peaceful people the world over. In May, the President made good on his promise to withdraw America from that deal, reimposing sanctions to deter Tehran’s malign activities.
Embracing “peace through strength,” President Trump has presided over a remarkable year in American foreign policy. Today in New York, he built on last year’s message to world leaders, making it clear that the work is only just beginning.
“Sovereign and independent nations are the only vehicle where freedom has ever survived, democracy has ever endured, or peace has ever prospered,” President Trump said. “So together, let us choose a future of patriotism, prosperity, and pride. Let us choose peace and freedom over domination and defeat. And let us come here to this place to stand for our people and their nations.”President Trump returns to the U.N.—with new evidence for ‘peace through strength’

President Trump, at UN General Assembly, Signs Major Trade Deal with South Korea
“President Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-in signed a major agreement of Trump’s trade agenda Monday, on a busy day at the U.N. General Assembly,” Frank Miles reports for Fox News. With the new deal, “U.S. automobiles, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products will gain better access to Korean markets.”
“This agreement will reduce bureaucracy and increase prosperity in both of our countries. Workers in South Korea and America will find new customers and new opportunities to expand and grow,” President Trump said.

In The Daily Signal, LIBRE Initiative President Daniel Garza writes that Latino communities have been lifted in this booming economy. “According to the [Census] Bureau, median household income in the U.S. has increased for three consecutive years,” he writes. “That’s also true for Hispanic households in particular, who saw their median income increase by 3.7 percent in just the last year.”

Professors at Yale University have a released “a new study calculating there are between 16 million and 30 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. — as much as three times more than most demographers figure,” Stephen Dinan reports in The Washington Times. “The professors’ model looked at estimates of how many people came illegally, and how many people likely left, and concluded there are a lot more people who arrived than the 11 million suggested by traditional estimates.”

“CIA Director Gina Haspel pledged Monday that the spy agency would step up its efforts to stem the flow of opioids into the U.S., saying illegal drugs have killed more Americans than terrorists,” Ken Dilanian reports for NBC News. “Haspel made the remarks in her first public appearance as director, speaking at the University of Louisville in her native Kentucky, where she earned a degree.”

Just now, President Trump keeps another promise on trade

The White House to you

Just now, President Trump keeps another promise on trade
"For decades politicians have talked about fixing broken trade deals only to do absolutely nothing about them,” President Donald J. Trump said this afternoon from New York. “My Administration is the first to actually keep our promise and deliver.”
In New York City for the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly this week, President Trump met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in today to sign a new trade agreement that protects American workers and businesses. The revised deal will increase U.S. exports while preserving jobs in America’s auto industry.
Under the old U.S.–Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS) signed in 2012, our trade deficit skyrocketed from 6.3 billion to $9.8 billion by 2017. Under the new arrangement, South Korea will double the annual number of American automobiles that can enter its market using U.S. safety standards. Seoul has also agreed to address issues with onerous and costly customs procedures that have hindered American exports.
The Republic of Korea is a key ally and trading partner of the United States; improving U.S.–Korean trade will help to strengthen this crucial economic and national security relationship. “Our two countries have set an example of friendship and cooperation for trade that rarely you see in this age,” President Trump said.

A drug epidemic without borders
Kicking off the week at U.N. headquarters in New York, President Trump addressed an issue that his Administration has worked tirelessly to address since Inauguration Day: a deadly drug epidemic that spills across national borders.
Last month, the United States announced a “Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem.” This morning, President Trump explained the effort to leaders from across the globe. “The call is simple: reduce drug demand; cut off the supply of illicit drugs; expand treatment; and strengthen international cooperation. If we take these steps together, we can save the lives of countless people in all corners of the world.”
The 2018 World Drug Report highlights the scope of the problem and the need for action. As cocaine and opium production have hit record highs, global deaths caused by drug use increased by 60 percent from 2000 to 2015. This market for illicit drugs fuels organized crime, corruption, and terrorism the world over.
“The scourge of drug addiction continues to claim too many lives in the United States and in nations around the world,” President Trump said. “Today, we commit to fighting the drug epidemic together.”

President Trump to UN: “We Commit to Fighting the Drug Epidemic Together”
“President Donald Trump in his address at a high-level meeting on the ‘Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem,’ said that the United States is committed to ‘fighting the drug epidemic together,’” CBS News reports this morning.

“The call is simple,” the President said. “Reduce drug demand, cut off the supply of illicit drugs, expand treatment and straighten international cooperation. If we take these steps together, we can save the lives of countless people in all corners of the world.”

In the New York Post, Jonathan Tobin writes that President Trump’s Iran sanctions are working—something the establishment critics once again got wrong. “The success of oil sanctions should not only encourage the United States to push Tehran harder. It’s also one more reason to ignore the so-called experts’ contempt for Trump’s unconventional but clearly spot-on approach to the region.”

“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo reaffirmed Friday that the Trump administration is committed to religious liberty, both at home and abroad,” Fred Lucas writes in The Daily Signal. “We are assuring human dignity by advancing one of our most cherished, indispensable liberties, enshrined in the First Amendment. It is our religious liberty,” Secretary Pompeo said.
