President Trump’s Tax Plan is Working for America

“As Americans filed their taxes this spring, they wrestled for the last time with a system that for decades plundered their paychecks and made American businesses uncompetitive,” Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross writes in an op-ed for CNBC.

“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act signed into law by President Trump in December is already benefiting American families, workers, and companies,” Secretary Ross adds. “The United States will continue to reap the economic benefits generated by tax reform for years to come.”

In the Washington Examiner, Gabby Morrongiello reports that President Trump “called on Congress to boost funding for his border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, in addition to ending loopholes that incentivize illegal immigration.” Addressing reporters from the White House Rose Garden, President Trump said that “there’s no country in the world that has laws like we do. They’ve got to change now for the safety of our country.”
------------

“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un a month ago, said he saw a ‘real opportunity’ to negotiate an end to the regime’s nuclear weapons program,” David Beavers writes in Politico. “We’re going to look for actions and deeds,” Secretary Pompeo explained. “And until such time, the president has made it incredibly clear we will keep the pressure campaign in place until we achieve that.”
------------
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the United States is well on its way toward a goal of sustained economic growth, Ken Martin reports for Fox Business. “I think the economy is doing fabulous,” Secretary Mnuchin says, citing enduring 3 percent GDP growth under the Trump Administration.

Between October 2016 and December 2017, the Department of Health and Human Services was unable to locate nearly 1,500 out of the 7,635 unaccompanied alien minors it attempted to reach—almost one-fifth of its file, Leila Miller reports for PBS Frontline. “I don’t care what you think about immigration policy, it’s wrong,” Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) said.

President Trump proclaims Small Business Week

The White House to you
Tuesday, May 01, 2018 Viet Nam

The White House • April 30, 2018
Driving the Day
President Donald J. Trump will hold meetings today with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari at the White House. President Buhari’s visit comes after President Trump hosted German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron last week. Watch live at 1:30 p.m. ET.
President Trump proclaims Small Business Week
Today marks the beginning of Small Business Week. The U.S. Small Business Administration under Administrator Linda McMahon has been committed to expanding opportunity for entrepreneurs and job creators across the country. In addition to other events this week, SBA is hosting a 3-day virtual conference beginning tomorrow.
“Small businesses are at the heart of our Nation,” President Trump writes in his Proclamation. “Our country’s 30 million small businesses employ nearly 58 million Americans — 48 percent of the labor force. Each year, small businesses create two-out-of-three net new, private-sector jobs in the United States.”
The Administration’s economic program reflects that fact. In addition to ongoing regulatory rollback across the Federal government, the United States now operates “under a globally competitive tax system for the first time in decades,” according to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
Out today: Secretary Ross on tax reform’s results for U.S. workers and businesses.
What they’re saying: Secretary Pompeo on the job
Last week, the Senate confirmed former CIA Director Mike Pompeo as Secretary of State in a bipartisan vote. On Friday, the day after his confirmation, he took his first overseas trip as Secretary to Belgium to meet with NATO leaders.
Officials from across the political spectrum praise Pompeo’s record. “Mike Pompeo is one of the most outstanding nominees we could have for Secretary of State,” Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-TN) says. “In his role at the CIA, Mr. Pompeo has demonstrated the ability to be an effective manager and operator on the world stage,” Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL) adds.
President Trump urges the Senate to move quickly on other key nominations. Among the most important is Secretary Pompeo’s successor as CIA Director. Gina Haspel, the President’s nominee, has spent 33 years of her life serving America in dangerous posts and foreign capitals around the globe. Before becoming CIA Deputy Director last year, she had served seven field tours and held three leadership positions at the CIA.

Meet America’s new Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo

The White House to you
Saturday, April 28, 2018 Viet Nam

The White House • April 27, 2018
Driving the Day

Americans won 9 gold medals—and 23 overall—at this year’s Winter Games. President Donald J. Trump congratulated U.S. Olympians this morning. Watch here.
President Trump welcomes German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Washington today, following Mrs. Merkel’s recent reelection to a fourth term. Watch live at 1:50 p.m. ET.
Meet America’s new Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo
Yesterday, the Senate easily confirmed Mike Pompeo to be our 70th Secretary of State. Pompeo, who has served as CIA Director since last year, drew unanimous Republican support and earned the votes of several key Democrats. “Considering his distinguished time as CIA Director & his exemplary career in public service, I will vote to confirm Mike Pompeo,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) tweeted this week.
Pompeo’s bipartisan confirmation attests to his record. Newspaper editorial boards across the country have praised his invaluable mix of instincts and experience. “He has invigorated the CIA clandestine service, tried to give Mr. Trump options on North Korea, and has gained the President’s trust,” The Wall Street Journal explained last Wednesday.
President Trump calls Pompeo a true patriot. “He will always put the interests of America first. He has my trust. He has my support. Today, he has my congratulations,” the President said in a statement.

What’s in your medicine cabinet?

Each day, Americans are prescribed medications that go unused. These left-over drugs often wind up in medicine cabinets, closets, and other spaces throughout the home. Unused or expired medicines often seem innocuous, but many contribute to accidental poisonings, overdoses, and thefts across the country.
Tomorrow is a good day to help change that. President Trump has announced that the 15th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day will be tomorrow, Saturday, April 28. Held twice per year, Take Back Day is an opportunity for families to dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs at one of any thousands of drop-off sites.
Disposal can also be done safely through the mail. Multiple retail pharmacies, such as Costco, CVS, and Rite Aid, sell postage-paid envelopes to mail in left-over medicines. Free mail-in envelopes are also offered by the National Safety Council.

President Trump said that the families of America’s service members are “the foundation of our military might.”
------------

Vice President Mike Pence writes in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that “tax cuts are working for Wisconsin.” The Vice President also offered his assurances that the Trump Administration will keep delivering for working people across the United States: “You can take that promise to the bank — and come tax day next year, you can cash it.”

What you need to know about entry restrictions

The White House to you
Friday, April 27, 2018 Viet Nam

                                                       The White House • April 26, 2018
Driving the Day

President Donald J. Trump will welcome service members and veterans to the White House today for the 2018 Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride. Watch live at 10:30 a.m. ET.
In honor of Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders will hold a mock briefing this morning with children of White House press corps members.
What you need to know about entry restrictions
The Supreme Court heard arguments yesterday about President Trump’s proclamation to limit travel from countries that pose an elevated threat to the United States from terrorism. “This proclamation is about what it says it’s about: foreign policy and national security,” Solicitor General Noel J. Francisco told the justices.
President Trump’s actions will strengthen America’s screening and vetting. Last September, the President placed entry restrictions on nationals from certain countries. The proclamation followed an extensive review that determined some countries were not adequately sharing information about their residents with the United States, or they presented other risk factors relevant to national security.
The President’s top priority is the safety of the American people. Sensible entry restrictions advance that priority. In fact, following President Trump’s actions, other countries have adopted new security measures that strengthen our ability to properly vet individuals seeking to enter the United States.
What you need to know about President Trump’s entry restrictions
Welcoming our wounded warriors

Returning to civilian life can be difficult for veterans. Many of our heroes suffer from depression or post-traumatic stress disorder upon discharge—not to mention a variety of physical challenges that can accompany service in the Armed Forces. Resources for this community are essential.
Fortunately, the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is here to help. WWP’s noble mission is to “honor and empower Wounded Warriors,” connecting them to peers and other opportunities that can smooth the transition from military service. Now in its 15th year, the Soldier Ride is one of WWP’s biggest events.
Today, President Trump welcomes some of these heroes to the White House. “Each of you has forged in battle the sacred bonds of loyalty that link our people together,” the President said during last year’s Soldier Ride. “Our country, our values, our very way of life, endures because of you, and it endures because brave Americans raise up in every generation.”
See photos, and video as President Trump welcomed wounded warriors last year.

President Trump, Macron Honor 'Joint History' Between US, France at White House State Dinner

The White House to you
Thursday, April 26, 2018 Viet Nam

President Trump, Macron Honor 'Joint History' Between US, France at White House State Dinner
“President Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron toasted the Franco-American alliance at the White House Tuesday evening to mark the first state dinner of the Trump administration,” Samuel Chamberlain reports for Fox News. In President Trump’s pre-dinner toast, he expressed hope that “our friendship grow even deeper . . . our kinship grow even stronger and . . . [and] our sacred liberty never die.”

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) writes in The Kansas City-Star that “Central Intelligence Agency Director and fellow Kansan Mike Pompeo is the man our country needs to lead the State Department as the next secretary of state.” Sen. Roberts explains that “many of my colleagues across the aisle are making Pompeo’s nomination about politics, instead of his fitness to serve our country.”
------------

In The Wall Street Journal, Senior Adviser to the President Jared Kushner writes that “by reforming federal prisons, Congress has the opportunity to help give former inmates a second chance to become successful, contributing members of society.” Kushner notes that this policy ties into the President’s agenda: “President Trump promised to fight for the forgotten men and women of this country—and that includes those in prison.”
------------
“The Trump administration wants taxpayers to check their paychecks for the tax cuts,” Joseph Lawler of the Washington Examiner reports. He writes that the Treasury Department issued an appeal to workers to double-check the amount withheld from their paychecks using the IRS’ updated calculator. “This is a pivotal and exciting time for American workers,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

President Macron comes to Washington

This morning, French President Emmanuel Macron travels to Capitol Hill with Vice President Mike Pence to address a joint meeting of Congress.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments today about President Donald J. Trump’s proclamation to limit travel from countries that pose a heightened risk from terrorism. Learn more.
President Macron comes to Washington
It was a ceremony befitting America’s oldest ally. President Trump and the First Lady welcomed the French delegation yesterday with all the decorum of an official state visit, including a 21-gun salute, military inspection, and hundreds of guests waving French and American flags across the White House South Lawn.
“In America, I saw more than America,” French President Macron quoted from Alexis de Tocqueville, adding that the two countries share ideals of freedom and peace. “It is together that the United States and France will defeat terrorism. . . . It is together that we will counter the proliferation of arms of mass destruction, be it in North Korea or in Iran.”
In many ways, the alliance is stronger than ever. France is America’s third-largest European trading partner, to the tune of $1 billion in business transactions each day. President Trump has worked closely with France to combat terror around the world and, most recently, confront Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s heinous chemical weapons attack against his people.
President Trump called it a friendship “forged in revolution”—and one that changed the course of history. “Our two great republics are linked together by the timeless bonds of history, culture, and destiny.”
See highlights from yesterday’s Arrival Ceremony on the South Lawn.

A call 220 million miles away
“ISS, this is headquarters. How do you hear us?” The video call to the International Space Station came moments after Vice President Pence swore in Jim Bridenstine to be the next Administrator of NASA. “Mr. Vice President, Mr. Bridenstine, welcome onboard the International Space Station,” the crew replied.
“A year ago, President Trump relaunched the National Space Council,” the Vice President said. “The President has signed his first space policy directive that we’re going to renew America’s commitment to human space exploration, starting with the moon on to Mars.” He added that President Trump wants to make NASA’s extraordinary work for the past six decades “just a preamble” to renewed American leadership in space.

The ‘unbreakable’ friendship of America and France

The White House to you
Wednesday, April 25, 2018 Viet Nam

                                                     The White House • April 24, 2018
Driving the Day

This morning at 9 a.m. ET, President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump host the official State Welcome Ceremony for French President Emmanuel Macron and Mrs. Brigitte Macron on the South Lawn. It is the first State Visit of the Trump Presidency. Watch live.
The ‘unbreakable’ friendship of America and France America’s relationship with France predates our country’s founding. When American colonists fought for independence, France supported them with military and economic aid. From the days of Benjamin Franklin and General Marquis de Lafayette to the modern era with Presidents Trump and Macron, U.S. and French leaders have long shared common values on a range of issues.
Today, the countries’ two leaders have forged a close bond. “Both President Macron and I understand our responsibility to prioritize the interests of our countries and, at the same time, to be respectful of the world in which we live,” President Trump said in Paris last year. “The friendship between our two nations—and ourselves, I might add—is unbreakable.”
The First Couples met last night before today’s official visit. President Trump, the First Lady, President Macron, and Mrs. Macron took a scenic tour of the monuments in our Nation’s capital. They then traveled to President George Washington’s home in Mount Vernon, Virginia, for dinner ahead of today’s welcome ceremony.

President Trump Goes All Out for First State Visit, Will Welcome Emmanuel Macron

President Trump Goes All Out for First State Visit, Will Welcome Emmanuel Macron
President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are excited to welcome French President Emmanuel Macron and Mrs. Brigitte Macron for the Trump Administration’s first official State Visit. “Monday evening, the two couples will depart the White House on the presidential helicopter Marine One, for a scenic tour of historic monuments in Washington, ending at Mount Vernon — the iconic home of America’s first president, George Washington,” S. A. Miller reports.

The Chicago Tribune Editorial Board writes that the Senate should confirm CIA Director Mike Pompeo to be our next Secretary of State. The editors explain that Director Pompeo “knows well how to work with both Congress and the president — who trusts him so much he sent him on a secret mission to Pyongyang to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.”
------------

In The Topeka Capital-Journal, Gov. Jeff Colyer (R-KS) argues that “in a time when global unrest is high and our enemies seek to increase their spheres of influence, it is imperative that the Senate move to approve Mike Pompeo’s nomination for Secretary of State without delay.”

“To unlock America’s full potential, we need a welfare system of opportunity for the 21st century. The executive order signed by President Trump on Tuesday is a big step in the right direction,” Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson writes in The Washington Times. “Millions of people strive every day to escape poverty. It’s time we reform our welfare system to support them and unlock the untapped human potential in our forgotten inner cities and small towns,” Secretary Carson adds.
------------
In Fox News, David Bossie writes that “the effort by Senate Democrats to block CIA Director Mike Pompeo from being confirmed as secretary of state is just [their] latest political stunt.” Bossie says that we live in serious times, and Americans are paying attention. “It’s time to confirm Mike Pompeo – with a simple majority if necessary.”

Senate prepares to vote on Mike Pompeo

The White House to you
Tuesday, April 24, 2018 Viet Nam

                                                     The White House • April 23, 2018
Driving the Day

President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcome French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Mrs. Brigitte Macron, to Washington today. The First Couples will visit Mount Vernon tonight before France’s official State Visit begins tomorrow.
An inside look at hosting a State Visit
State Dinners with foreign leaders date back to 1874. When King David Kalakaua of the Kingdom of Hawaii (later annexed by the United States) visited Washington that year, there was no guide for how President Ulysses S. Grant should welcome him. No matter how the visit went, it would set a precedent.
The result was a tradition that continues to this day. President Trump hosts the first official State Visit of his Administration when President Macron and Mrs. Macron of France come to the White House. While President Trump has hosted numerous foreign leaders, tomorrow will mark the first ceremonial State Visit among them.
State Visits are intricately planned to show respect for a visiting leader. The end goal of such events is practical. Just as negotiations over trade drove King Kalakaua to the White House nearly a century and a half ago, better trade deals will be a fixture of the conversations between Presidents Trump and Macron this week.

Senate prepares to vote on Mike Pompeo
Mike Pompeo is the Secretary of State America needs. Last year, the Senate voted 66-32 to confirm Pompeo as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and the full Senate is expected to approve his nomination for Secretary of State in the coming weeks. He has served the CIA with distinction for the past 14 months.
His nomination is earning widespread support. “Mike Pompeo has the intelligence, the integrity, and the experience to serve as America’s secretary of State,” Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) wrote last week. “We would be hard-pressed to find a nominee with greater experience and expertise,” national security expert Michael Allen says.
Director Pompeo’s record speaks for itself. He was a leader long before he arrived in Washington, patrolling the Iron Curtain as a U.S. Cavalry officer in West Germany before the Berlin Wall fell. He has been an entrepreneur, a Congressman, and first in his class at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He’s ready.
See why Mike Pompeo is ready to lead and what others are saying about his nomination.

Meet the team that’s dismantling the illicit drug trade

First Lady Melania Trump and President Donald J. Trump prepare to host French President Emmanuel Macron Tuesday for the first State Visit of the Trump Administration.
Today, Ivanka Trump and U.S. Treasurer Jovita Carranza travel to Rocky River, Ohio, for a town hall about wage hikes and boosted savings from President Trump’s tax cuts.
Meet the team that’s dismantling the illicit drug trade
President Trump visited the Joint Interagency Task Force South yesterday in Key West. The Task Force is a crucial team that many Americans have likely never heard about. Led by top officials from the Armed Services and key Federal agencies, its efforts to dismantle the illicit drug trade have saved countless American lives.
The Task Force faced record drug production during Fiscal Year 2017. In response, it supported the removal of a record 283 metric tons of cocaine and 5 kilograms of heroin, as well as the detention of 900 suspected members of drug trafficking organizations. Helping to lead an international coalition, the Task Force oversees a staggering area of 42 million square miles across the globe.
“We are behind you all the way,” President Trump said. “And we want to thank you.” The President called on Congressional Democrats to support the Task Force by closing loopholes that allow drugs and human traffickers to spill into the United States. “We need border protection; we need the wall,” he said.

'Right from the beginning we hit it off’
The President concluded a productive summit with Japanese leader Shinzo Abe this week. It marked the sixth meeting and third major summit between the two men since President Trump took office. “Right from the beginning we hit it off,” the President said. “The relationship is a very good one.”
Denuclearization of North Korea topped the agenda. With a meeting between President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un in the works, both the White House and Prime Minister Abe underscored that a global maximum pressure campaign on Pyongyang will continue until North Korea abandons all ballistic missiles and weapons of mass destruction. That point is nonnegotiable.
American and Japan also agreed to intensify trade talks. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will lead discussions for the U.S. side, guided by the President’s goal of free, fair, and reciprocal trade with each of our allies. “The relationship has been so good with all of us, and let’s see how we do with, right now, the trade deficit,” President Trump told Prime Minister Abe.

President Trump, Japan's Abe Agree to Intensify Trade Talks

The White House to you
Friday, April 20, 2018

President Trump, Japan's Abe Agree to Intensify Trade Talks
“President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said on Wednesday they had agreed to intensify trade consultations between the two longtime allies, with an aim to expand investment and trade between their countries,” Steve Holland reports for Reuters. “President Trump and I agreed to start talks for free, fair and reciprocal trade deals,” Prime Minister Abe said at a joint news conference with the President.

Holland notes that President Trump “reaffirmed his desire at the news conference to address trade imbalances with Japan, saying he preferred one-on-one talks to negotiate a bilateral deal aimed at trimming the U.S. trade deficit.”

Christian Whiton writes in The Hill that “by essentially all accounts, Pompeo performed extremely well as CIA director, managing and reforming that sprawling bureaucracy and helping to defeat ISIS, among other accomplishments.” Whiton adds that after his successful meeting with North Korea, Director Pompeo has “shown himself to be adept at tough diplomacy even without the title and trappings of being secretary of State.”
------------

MarketWatch reports that jobless claims fell to 232,000 this month, according to the Department of Labor. Jeffry Bartash writes that “the rate of layoffs in the U.S. fell slightly in April and clung near a 45-year low, reflecting a booming jobs market in which work is easy to find.”

“The Trump administration released $485 million worth of grants to states and territories to combat the opioid epidemic, the second round of grants aimed at curbing abuse,” Robert King reports for the Washington Examiner. “These funds will help support evidence-based efforts at the state level to prevent misuse of opioids in the first place, expand access to effective treatment options for people in need and support recovery for those who have prevailed,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement.

Look at what’s happening in America’s heartland

The White House to you
Friday, April 20, 2018

                                                      The White House • April 19, 2018
Driving the Day

President Donald J. Trump will meet with the Joint Interagency Task Force South in Key West, Florida, today. He’ll say that to help the task force do its job, he is calling on Congress to close loopholes that allow drugs and criminals to enter our country.
Look at what’s happening in America’s heartland

America was founded because of taxes, rallying to the cry “No taxation without representation!” So when Americans elected a Washington outsider, Donald J. Trump, to reform government, the most sweeping overhaul of the tax code in American history was a natural place to start.
Tax cuts are key to the optimism spreading across our heartland. Today, several Midwest states boast among the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Key industries in America’s interior are thriving, with manufacturers anticipating their fastest wage growth in 17 years. “I ran on ‘tired of being 50th.’ And we’re finally first in all kinds of things,” Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV) told President Trump this month.
Here’s why: Cutting taxes and red tape isn’t about cutting services. In fact, it’s the opposite. President Trump is streamlining government to make it work better for the communities who need it most. One recent example is the Administration’s decision to expedite the environmental review process for major infrastructure projects.
The President’s plan is to expand opportunity in every part of the country. So far, it’s working
The legacy of First Lady Barbara Bush
Barbara Bush was the “rock” of one of America’s most visible families. The mother of 6 and grandmother of 17 “kept us on our toes and kept us laughing until the end,” former President George W. Bush said this week. “I’m a lucky man that Barbara Bush was my mother.”
Mrs. Bush’s legacy extends far beyond her role as matriarch. She served as a trusted adviser to her husband, President George H. W. Bush, and she tirelessly championed the cause of literacy throughout her life. She attended more than 500 literacy events during the Reagan Administration—before she’d even become First Lady of the United States.
She was also a bipartisan symbol of women’s empowerment. When she famously wore fake pearls to her husband’s Presidential Inauguration and other White House events, her deputy press secretary quipped it was because “she just really likes them.” Polls showed that Americans loved her down-to-earth, no-nonsense style.
Barbara Bush put “family and country above all else,” First Lady Melania Trump says.
