No more roadblocks

The White House to you
Thursday, February 15, 2018

No more roadblocks to rebuilding America The Anderson Memorial Bridge between Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, sits near the heart of Harvard University. An elegant, Georgian Revival structure, it took 11 months to build the original bridge in 1912.
When it came time to repair it nearly 100 years later, the project dragged on for close to 5 years—at a significant cost overrun.
Why did it take more than 5 times as long to repair the structure today as it did to create it more than a century ago? The Anderson Bridge project was the victim of a bloated, tangled patchwork of regulatory oversight that squanders the advantages of modern technology in building fast, safe, and reliable infrastructure throughout America.
This week, President Donald J. Trump laid out six principles for reversing this unacceptable trend. One such principle: Return decision-making authority to the state and local communities whose needs are most at stake.
See the President’s 6 principles for rebuilding America here.
A special 200th birthday
Most people know February 14 as Valentine’s Day, but today holds another significance that all Americans should be familiar with: It is the 200th birthday of abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass.
In honor of African American History Month, Vice President Mike Pence visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington yesterday. Authorized by President George W. Bush in 2003 and opened to the public in 2016, the museum has quickly become a major destination in the Nation’s capital.
“It is deeply humbling for me to stand before you today in the midst of this great national monument to the struggles, the sacrifices, and the triumphs of so many American heroes,” the Vice President said. “The history that’s recorded in these halls literally is stitched into every fabric of the American story.”
Later yesterday afternoon, African American leaders from across the country joined President Trump and the First Lady for a reception at the White House commemorating African American History Month.
Read more about the special meaning of this year’s African American History Month.
On tax reform, the good news keeps rolling in
In the weeks following the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, American companies have unleashed a remarkable stream of wage increases, bonuses, and retirement account contributions—all while sharing plans for even greater investment in workers and equipment alike.
As of this week, more than 350 companies have made these intentions public, announcing more than $150 billion in planned investments at home and $4.2 billion in bonuses paid to more than 4 million U.S. workers. The largest U.S. company, the largest U.S. bank, and the largest U.S. employer have all announced intentions to raise worker wages or give out bonuses during the past few weeks.
What does all of this good news add up to? While it’s impossible to measure with complete certainty the effects of such sweeping legislation, the President’s Council of Economic Advisers estimates that the total increase in annual pay resulting from tax reform will reach $4,000 per household.

Our infrastructure is broken

The White House to you
Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Our infrastructure is broken Years of inaction have allowed American infrastructure to degrade into a state of disrepair. With yesterday’s release of President Donald J. Trump’s Legislative Outline for Rebuilding Infrastructure in America, the Administration is committed to reversing this sad course.
Here are the facts:
One out of every five miles of highway pavement in the United States is in poor condition.
  • More than 50,000 American bridges are rated as “structurally deficient.”
  • Commute times have increased every year since 2009—and more than 40 percent of urban interstate miles are congested.
  • Nearly 40 percent of Americans living in rural areas lack sufficient broadband access.
  • Lengthy reviews hold up infrastructure projects for years.
  • The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that failing to meet our infrastructure needs will cost us $4 trillion in GDP and 2.5 million jobs by 2025.
  • Bonus read: “A Nation’s infrastructure is a measure of its greatness,” says Gary Cohn
    An American budget
Yesterday, White House Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney released the Fiscal Year 2019 Budget for the U.S. Government: “Efficient, Effective, Accountable: An American Budget.”
“As a nation, we face difficult times—challenged by a crumbling infrastructure, growing deficits, rogue nations, and irresponsible Washington spending,” Director Mulvaney said. “Through this budget proposal, it is clear that the President and this Administration are determined to reverse these trends.”
Seven things to know about the President’s budget:
It provides for a robust and rebuilt national defense.
  • It promotes a healthy American economy.
  • It curbs wasteful Washington spending.
  • It supports the President’s innovative infrastructure initiative.
  • It secures our porous southern border and strengthens enforcement of immigration law.
  • It keeps our commitment to improving veterans’ health.
  • It combats the opioids epidemic.

    Watch: Let the Games begin
Vice President Mike Pence arrived in South Korea last week with Second Lady Karen Pence to lead the American Olympic Delegation for the 2018 Winter Games. He attended the Opening Ceremony in Pyeongchang, South Korea, on Friday.
The Vice President met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in ahead of the Games, discussing how the United States and our global allies will continue to intensify a maximum pressure campaign on North Korea until it abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile programs once and for all.
“We will protect our peoples. We will defend our freedom. And together, we will forge a future of security, prosperity, and peace for both of our nations for generations to come,” the Vice President said.

On infrastructure, Trump Administration seeks to avoid Obama stimulus trap

    The White House to you

On infrastructure, Trump Administration seeks to avoid Obama stimulus trap
“The Trump administration hopes that $200 billion in new federal infrastructure spending over the next ten years can trigger up to $1.8 trillion in investments by the private sector plus state and local governments, to the benefit of roads, bridges and jobs,” the Washington Examiner reports.

President Donald J. Trump’s goal is to streamline the permitting process. “Two years is our goal, but one year is our real goal,” the President says.

Christina Wilkie of CNBC breaks down President Trump’s newly unveiled infrastructure plan, which includes greater investment in rural infrastructure and incentives for state and municipal projects.
    ------------
In an op-ed for The Hill, Alfredo Ortiz calls out Democrats for their hypocrisy on the success of the Trump tax cuts. Democrats were quick to characterize the tax cuts as “cruel” and “unjust,” but now working Americans across the country are seeing more money in their pockets. “What a difference a couple of months makes,” Ortiz writes.
    ------------
St. John Properties, a Baltimore development company, announced that it will give each of its 180 employees a “one-time cash bonus of $1,500” in response to the recent Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, according to The Baltimore Sun. “We are optimistic about the long-term benefits of this legislation,” St. John President Lawrence Maykrantz said in the announcement.
    ------------
After a woman who lost her son to opioids appeared in an interview, President Trump sent a message to let the world know that her son “will not have died in vain, ”The Daily Caller reports.

The President’s plan to rebuild America

    The White House to you
    Tuesday, February 13, 2018

JUST RELEASED: In President Donald J. Trump’s latest Weekly Address, he discusses his meeting with law enforcement leaders last week on the scourge of violence from the gang MS-13. “Glaring loopholes in our laws have allowed criminals and gang members to break into our country,” President Trump says.
    Watch his Address here.
    -------------------
The President’s plan to rebuild America
America has long been a Nation of builders, President Trump told the country January 30 in his first State of the Union Address. “We built the Empire State Building in just 1 year—is it not a disgrace that it can now take 10 years just to get a permit approved for a simple road?”
He called on leaders of both parties in Congress to come together to deliver the safe, reliable, and modern infrastructure that Americans deserve. Today, he will outline his legislative principles to accomplish just that:
$200 billion in Federal funds to spur at least $1.5 trillion in infrastructure investments with partners at the state, local, tribal, and private level
  • New investments in rural America, which has been left behind for too long
  • Decision-making authority will return to state and local governments
  • Regulatory barriers that needlessly get in the way of infrastructure projects will be removed
  • Permitting for infrastructure projects will be streamlined and shortened
  • America’s workforce will be supported and strengthened
  • “We will build gleaming new roads, bridges, highways, railways, and waterways all across our land,” President Trump said. “And we will do it with American heart, and American hands, and American grit.”
Read more about how President Trump plans to rebuild America’s infrastructure.
To save Gaza, turn on the lights
The Kerem Shalom border crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip has long been a flashpoint for conflict. Last weekend, Israeli authorities foiled a Hamas attempt to smuggle explosives at the crossing into Gaza—including components expected to be used to launch projectiles into Israel.
While Hamas’ attacks on Israel are well-documented, Hamas’ exploitation of the people it claims to govern is appalling in its own right. Hamas can’t even keep the lights on, and must depend on the generosity of the Palestinian Authority for a few hours of power each day.
“Imagine what the people of Gaza could do with the $100 million Iran has historically given Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups annually that Hamas uses for weapons and tunnels to attack Israel,” wrote Jason Greenblatt, Assistant to President Donald J. Trump and Special Representative for International Negotiations.

    A $10,000 check
The afternoon of President Trump’s first State of the Union Address 13 days ago, The Washington Post ran a story about a special interaction the President had with campaign volunteer Shane Bouvet:

The unusual meeting was arranged after Trump said he read a profile about Bouvet in The Washington Post. The struggling single father had spent nights working and days volunteering for Trump, who Bouvet hoped could bring renewal to his home town of Stonington, Ill., and other corners hard hit by the decline in U.S. industry.

On Monday, [a $10,000 check from the President] arrived in the mail.

… Bouvet said he planned to use the money to pay for chemotherapy for his father, who he said is suffering from bladder cancer.
On Friday, President Trump once again met with Bouvet—along with his father, Donald Bouvet, who is now cancer-free. “And I just think it’s an incredible story. Very rarely do I hear a story like this,” the President said.
“I want to thank Mr. President for everything and the blessings that he’s done for me and my family,” Shane Bouvet said.

Mike Pence, accompanied by Otto Warmbier's father, meets with North Korean defectors

    The White House to you
    Saturday, February 10, 2018

Mike Pence, accompanied by Otto Warmbier's father, meets with North Korean defectors
Vice President Mike Pence met with North Korean defectors Friday as he uses his appearance at the Winter Olympics to call on the international community to grow tougher on North Korea’s nuclear program and human rights abuses,” The Associated Press reports. Accompanying Vice President Pence was “special guest Fred Warmbier, whose son Otto Warmbier died after his release from captivity in North Korea.”

    ------------
In USA Today, Eliza Collins writes that Ivanka Trump has teamed up with conservatives to promote democratic themes such as “paid family leave, equal pay for women and affordable childcare.” Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) says that Ivanka makes “very compelling cases” for issues “that conservatives would normally not be in favor of.”
    ------------
In the Washington Examiner, Paul Bedard writes that in President Donald J. Trump’s “budget, set for release Monday, his administration is planning the biggest reform to the federal workforce in decades, using models from Amazon, Google, and a handful of well-operating agencies.” Bedard explains that “the proposed changes are part of a broader effort to modernize the government and integrate the types of innovation that the president’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is drafting.”
    ------------
“President Trump signed a bipartisan spending bill Friday morning, saying it will provide stable funding for the military and help the economy,” Dave Boyer reports in The Washington Times. “Our Military will now be stronger than ever before,” President Trump tweeted. “We love and need our Military and gave them everything — and more. First time this has happened in a long time."
    ------------
Armstrong Williams writes in The Hill that “if there is one main thing to take away from Pence’s visit to Israel, it is that the U.S.-Israel relationship is finally back on firm footing where it belongs.” Williams welcomes the change compared to the previous administration. “President Trump is a clear friend upon whom Israel can rely,” Williams adds, “and the strong backing of our most important ally in the Middle East extends throughout the president’s Cabinet and reaches across his entire administration.”

President Trump delivers huge win for military

    The White House to you
    Saturday, February 10, 2018

President Trump delivers huge win for military President Donald J. Trump signed a two-year, bipartisan budget bill this morning that ends Congress’ brief overnight shutdown of the federal government.
“Just signed Bill. Our Military will now be stronger than ever before,” President Trump tweeted this morning. “We love and need our Military and gave them everything — and more. First time this has happened in a long time.”
The President then laid out what must be accomplished in 2018. “Costs on non-military lines will never come down if we do not elect more Republicans in the 2018 Election, and beyond,” he tweeted. “This Bill is a BIG VICTORY for our Military, but much waste in order to get Dem votes.”
Read more: Press Secretary Sarah Sanders and Defense Secretary James Mattis explain the budget deal.
    ‘A magnificent Winter Olympics’
The 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea, kicked off in spectacular fashion with its Opening Ceremony early this morning. Vice President Mike Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence are in South Korea to lead the American Olympic delegation.
The Vice President held a bilateral meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Seoul yesterday before the Games. “Allow me to join President Trump in congratulating South Korea on what we know, in his words, ‘will be a magnificent Winter Olympics,’” Vice President Pence said.
As U.S. athletes compete in the Games, America will remain vigilant against threats to national security. “We’ll be there to cheer on our American athletes, but we’ll also be there to stand with our allies and remind the world that North Korea is the most tyrannical and oppressive regime on the planet,” the Vice President said Wednesday. “The United States of America will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder [with South Koreans] in our effort to bring maximum pressure to bear on North Korea,” he told President Moon yesterday.

The economic harm caused by our immigration system
As President Trump applauds congressional leaders for their budget deal that funds our great military for two years, he and Americans turn their sights to the pressing need for immigration reform in the weeks ahead.
“It is time to create a merit-based immigration system that makes sense for a modern economy,” the President has said. Here’s what he means:
Low-skilled labor: Low-skilled immigration has put downward pressure on U.S. wages at the expense of vulnerable American workers. Real hourly wages for Americans with a high school education or less are lower today than in 1979.
  • A strain on public resources: A majority, 51 percent, of immigrant-headed households uses at least one welfare program.
  • Reform to benefit the economy: President Trump’s immigration framework would end the visa lottery program and help reduce the backlog of high-skilled, employment-based immigrant cases.

    Thursday, February 08, 2018

Vice President Pence makes an important pit stop Vice President Mike Pence arrived in Japan yesterday to begin meeting with foreign leaders and building on the momentum of President Donald J. Trump’s historic visit to Asia last year.
But before the Vice President flew to Japan, he made a special stop in Alaska at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Monday evening. Gov. Bill Walker (I-AK) was at the Vice President’s side.
“As I prepare to travel to Japan and South Korea, I thought it was altogether fitting to begin here at Elmendorf, the first line of defense for the American people,” the Vice President said. “Missile defense begins here in Alaska. And the American people and the world should know that our nation is secure.
“Our nation's defenses from potential inbound missile attacks is the best in the world.”

    Getting tough on MS-13

    The White House to you
    Wednesday, February 07, 2018

Getting tough on MS-13 Elizabeth Alvarado, Robert Mickens, Evelyn Rodriguez, and Freddy Cuevas joined President Donald J. Trump last week as four of the special guests for his first State of the Union Address. They are the parents of Nisa Mickens and Kayla Cuevas, two young girls who were killed by the gang MS-13 in September 2016.
It’s estimated that MS-13 has as many as 10,000 members in at least 40 states. In the immigration framework President Trump sent to Congress last month, the White House calls for a bill that will give law enforcement the tools it needs to combat this brutal gang and stop its proliferation into American communities.
Today, the President is hosting a roundtable with law enforcement professionals and community leaders to discuss what immigration reforms are needed to dismantle this transnational gang once and for all.
Watch as President Trump hosts the roundtable at 1:45 PM ET.
Vice President Pence’s message in South Korea
Vice President Mike Pence left yesterday en route to Asia, where he’ll lead the American Presidential Delegation at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in South Korea. Second Lady Karen Pence joined him as a member of the Delegation.
This year’s Games hold particular importance given the recent actions of North Korea related to its nuclear weapons program. President Trump held a call Friday with South Korean President Moon Jae-in before meeting with defectors from North Korea in the Oval Office.
It was announced over the weekend that a special guest will accompany Vice President Pence. “Honored that Fred Warmbier, father of Otto Warmbier, will join us” in South Korea, the Vice President tweeted. Otto Warmbier was an American student detained in North Korea for 17 months before being released in severe condition and passing away four days later.
See the Vice President’s tweet: “We pledge to honor Otto’s memory with American resolve.”
    ‘Four magnificent words’
President Trump addressed workers at an Ohio manufacturing company yesterday, talking through the effects of tax reform and previewing what the Administration will fight for in 2018.
"Right here in Cincinnati, the Sheffer Corporation announced every single worker was getting a $1,000 tax cut bonus,” the President said. “That’s good. Hard working patriotic Americans like you are what makes this country run.”
At heart, tax relief is about reinvigorating the great middle class that built America. “We’re bringing back those four magnificent words: ‘Made in the USA,’” the President said.
Read President Trump’s message: “Thank you for believing in the American worker.”

What tax cuts mean for Ohio

    The White House to you
    Tuesday, February 06, 2018

What tax cuts mean for Ohio This afternoon, President Donald J. Trump visits Cincinnati, Ohio, for the second time during his Administration. He’ll be joined by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Republican legislators from Ohio to discuss what tax cuts and reform has meant for the state.
The President will tell Ohioans that since he signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act in late December, more than 300 companies have delivered bonuses, raises, or 401(k) investments to more than 3 million American workers. The result of the bill has been historic tax relief for Americans not seen since President Ronald Reagan’s Administration.
Before he speaks to Ohioans, President Trump will participate in a tour of the Sheffer Corporation—a manufacturer of hydraulic, pneumatic, and custom cylinders—and meet with Ohio business leaders.
Watch the President’s remarks live at 2:30 p.m. ET.
The President meets with North Korean defectors
President Trump met with eight defectors from North Korea Friday in the Oval Office. One person from the group, Ji Seong-ho, had joined the President as a special guest at last Tuesday’s State of the Union Address.
“[Seong-ho] really made an incredible impression on me and on everybody else, both on television and in that magnificent room,” the President said. “I had an opportunity to meet with some of the folks, and their stories are amazing.”
The defectors shared personal stories of their harrowing escapes from North Korea, as well as details on their experiences living under Pyongyang’s repressive Kim regime. The group of escapees met with other senior U.S. officials during their trip to Washington.
Watch as President Trump meets with these heroic North Korean defectors.

African American History Month and the Bonds of Patriotism

    The White House to you
    Friday, February 02, 2018

African American History Month and the Bonds of Patriotism In his Proclamation this week honoring African American History Month, President Donald J. Trump drew attention to a special theme this year: “African Americans in Times of War.”
“For far too long, African Americans bravely fought and died in the name of freedom, while at the same time struggling to attain equality, respect, and the full privileges of citizenship,” the President wrote. “Because of their love of country, these heroes insisted on serving and defending America despite racial prejudice, unequal treatment, diminished opportunities, and segregation.”
As he did during his State of the Union Address this week, President Trump used personal stories from real Americans to illustrate the significance of this struggle. “We remember soldiers like Sergeant Henry Johnson of the Harlem Hellfighters, the all-black National Guard unit that was among the first American forces to arrive in France during World War I,” the President wrote.
Johnson was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and a Purple Heart.
Read more about these heroes and President Trump’s Proclamation here.
Randomness cannot have a place in our immigration system
In his State of the Union Address Tuesday, President Trump called on Congress to finally solve the immigration and border security problems that have plagued America for far too long.

“Tonight, I am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, Democrats and Republicans, to protect our citizens of every background, color, religion, and creed,” the President said. “We have proposed new legislation that will fix our immigration laws and support our ICE and Border Patrol agents.”
It is crucial that any new immigration law replace randomness with merit in our system:
Replacing the visa lottery system will reduce waitlists in nuclear family-based and high-skilled employment immigration
  • Basing immigration on merit rather than chance will energize the U.S. economy and help low-wage American workers
  • Ending the systemic vulnerabilities of the current visa system will reduce national security risk as well as rampant fraud and abuse

President Trump addresses Republican Member Conference
The President traveled to West Virginia yesterday to speak to the 2018 House and Senate Republican Member Conference. He thanked legislators for the GOP’s numerous achievements during his first year in office—none bigger than December’s tax overhaul—and looked forward to what 2018 will hold.
    A few highlights:
“We know that, for Americans, nothing — absolutely nothing — is out of reach because we don’t know the meaning of the word ‘quit.’”
  • “[Eliminating] the individual mandate by itself is a big, powerful bill. That was just added on to what we did with the massive tax cuts.”
  • “We can fix bad trade deals and negotiate new ones that are fair. And the most important word to me, on trade, is ‘reciprocal.’ . . . If they’re going to do it to us, we’re going to do it to them.”
  • “One of the strengths of the Republican Party is that we’re a big tent with many diverse views, but the one thing we can all agree on — and that’s that, in every decision, we make our highest priority to serve and to protect the American people.”
  • Watch the President’s speech to Republicans here.

Tax bill beginning to deliver bigger paychecks to workers

    The White House to you
    Friday, February 02, 2018

Tax bill beginning to deliver bigger paychecks to workers “The contentious tax overhaul is beginning to deliver a change that many will welcome — bigger paychecks,” Sarah Skidmore Sell reports for The Associated Press. Sell notes that “a little extra money in the hands of most Americans may also help boost support of President Donald Trump and his tax plan.”

President Trump “was cheerfully, extravagantly specific as he peppered the crowd with aspiration after aspiration, achievement after achievement,” Roger Kimball writes about the State of the Union speech in American Greatness. “Trump’s speech reached with an open hand across the bitter partisan divide that has disfigured our public life these last couple of decades,” Kimball notes.

The Washington Examiner Editorial Board writes that “more than 70 percent of Americans who watched Trump’s State of the Union speech Tuesday said they favored the basic immigration proposals that the president laid out.” The Board agrees, arguing that “free people have a right to determine, through democratic processes, who can enter and live in their country, and to do so based on their own interests.”
Critics of President Trump have begun lashing out at Rebecca Crowder, executive director of Lily’s Place, a facility that treats babies born with neonatal abstinence syndrome. Her offense, according to The Herald-Dispatch? After First Lady Melania Trump visited the West Virginia facility last year, Crowder was featured in a video produced by the White House. "I get it—people feel very passionate about politics or Trump or whoever. But the reality is this is the first administration that has stepped up to help us,” Crowder says. “And don't think I didn't try with the last [administration].”

Matt Mackowiak writes in The Washington Times that President Trump “again showed that he can rise to the moment that a major speech requires, as he did in his first joint session address last year, as well as in important speeches in Saudi Arabia, Israel, Germany and recently at Davos. He offered a hand of bipartisanship to Democrats.”

“Not only are companies crediting Trump in their announcements, one major employer, Costco, disputed Democratic sneers that the bonuses are ‘crumbs’ and hide bigger profits,” Paul Bedard writes in Washington Examiner. “The number of companies offering employees higher wages, expanded insurance and retirement benefits and cash bonuses up to $3,000 has surged to 300 as more see benefits from the new GOP tax cuts,” Bedard explains.
