Tax reform is on track and Democrats want to derail it

The White House to you
Friday, December 01, 2017

“TAX REFORM IS ON TRACK AND DEMOCRATS WANT TO DERAIL IT. DON’T BELIEVE THESE MYTHS ABOUT THE SENATE’S BILL”
-Alfredo Ortiz in Fox News
Alfredo Ortiz, president and CEO of the Job Creators Network, writes in Fox News that as Republican tax reform heads to the Senate floor for a potential vote, “Democrats are desperate to derail long-overdue tax relief.”

“There are no good arguments against allowing hardworking Americans to keep more of their money,” says Ortiz. But that hasn’t stopped five myths from circulating among the left and its media allies. Among Ortiz’s favorites: The Republican bill raises taxes on the middle class, and it will blow a $1.4 trillion hole in the deficit. Neither claim is true – and Ortiz marshals the evidence to prove it.

In foreign policy news, Josh Smith and Michelle Nichols of Reuters report that the United States has issued a warning to North Korean leadership following the launch of the regime’s most advanced missile to date. “If war comes, make no mistake, the North Korean regime will be utterly destroyed,” said Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. She also confirmed that Washington has asked China to block oil supply to North Korea, a major step that China has so far not implemented.

Michael Anton, a senior national security official for the Administration, joined Fox News’ Bret Baier for an interview outside the White House this week. On dealing with the threat from the Kim regime, “We want all the nations of the world to do more,” he said. “Ultimately, that means Russia and China at the utmost, which have the greatest amount of economic ties and leverage over North Korea.”

“Tax reform makes America competitive again,” argue Michael Fryt and Pete Sepp of the National Taxpayers Union. The NTU leaders say tax reform is the Senate’s best opportunity in recent memory to do something positive for the country. “The Senate bill is not perfect, but the status quo is utterly unsustainable,” they write. “The House has done its job. Now it is the Senate’s turn.”

Democrats supported tax reform before they opposed it

The White House to you
Friday, December 01, 2017

Democrats supported tax reform before they opposed it Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel took aim at Democrats yesterday for their opposition to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act currently making its way through Congress.
“Democrats in Congress vowing to oppose the bill should remember what they themselves once supported,” writes McDaniel in the Washington Examiner. She offers a pretty good list:

  • Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said last year he favored cutting the corporate tax rate to make U.S. businesses competitive worldwide.
  • House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was on the same page: “It is long past time for tax reform that would lower the corporate rate.”
  • Expanding the child tax credit? Former Sen. Tom Daschle and Pelosi called on President Bush to do just that in 2003.
  • How about axing the Alternative Minimum Tax? None other than Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) wanted to replace it with a simpler flat rate during his presidential run.
The bottom line? Passing any major legislation is difficult – it requires genuine compromise and sacrifice. But the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is a good-faith effort to give middle- and working-class families a boost. Now, says McDaniel, Democrats “are nowhere to be found.”

President Trump talks taxes in Missouri
President Donald J. Trump traveled yesterday to St. Charles, Missouri, to speak about the crucial need to pass tax reform. The President emphasized the crippling effects of overtaxation on small businesses and pushed for reform that will “usher in a thrilling new era of opportunity and growth for this Nation.”
The proposed Republican plan is the most ambitious in decades: It cuts taxes for middle-income families, doubles the amount of income that’s taxed at a rate of zero, and expands the child tax credit. It also provides relief from the estate tax and sharply reduces the corporate rate from 35 percent to 20 percent. Still not enough? How about a one-time bargain rate on corporate earnings brought home that will flood trillions of dollars back into the U.S. economy.
“This is the right plan; this is the right time,” concluded President Trump. “This is good for the country, and that’s ultimately what it’s all about.”
Watch the President’s full remarks here and learn more about his goals for tax reform.

Taking action on North Korea
Yesterday President Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping following North Korea's missile launch this week. President Trump emphasized the pressing need for China to use all available levers to convince North Korea to end its provocations and return to the path of denuclearization.
Yesterday’s call follows one between President Trump and South Korean President Moon Jae-In on Tuesday. Both leaders underscored the grave threat that North Korea’s latest provocation poses not only to the United States and the Republic of Korea, but to the entire world. Such tests only serve to undermine North Korea’s security and deepen its diplomatic and economic isolation.

U.S. economy expanded at brisk 3.3 pct. pace in third quarter

The White House to you
Thursday, November 30, 2017

“US ECONOMY EXPANDED AT BRISK 3.3 PCT. PACE IN THIRD QUARTER”
-Paul Wiseman in The Associated Press

Paul Wiseman at The Associated Press reports that from July through September of this year, the U.S. economy grew at an annualized pace of 3.3 percent – “its fastest rate in three years.” That achievement, Wiseman explains, comes “despite damage from two devastating hurricanes.”

The article quotes Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors: “The news on the economy had previously been good, but it just got a little better.” Along with this GDP growth, the third quarter saw business investment increase to the tune of 7.3 percent, making it “the sharpest pickup since the end of 2016,” writes Wiseman. The causes he cites for this growth include a healthy job market and a drop in the dollar’s value, the latter of which makes American-made products cheaper to buy abroad.

In other economic news, Adam Shell of USA Today writes that the Dow saw its biggest gains since early September as the Republican tax bill moved closer to reality. “The tax plan is viewed by investors as the centerpiece of Trump's economic stimulus initiatives,” writes Shell, “as lower taxes . . . [are] seen as boosting the economy, corporate earnings and consumer spending.”

With more on tax reform, Noah Alldredge – owner of Big Time Results, a small personal training business in Missouri – speaks to The Daily Signal about how a simple and fairer tax code can benefit him, his employees, and his business.

On the growing drug epidemic, The Hill’s Jessie Hellmann reports that the Justice Department will award “$12 million in grants to help law enforcement agencies combat the opioid crisis.” In addition, the Drug Enforcement Agency will create a new office with 90 special agents and 130 task force officers to fight illicit drug trafficking in Kentucky, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

In national security, “there are few dangers more devastating than a nuclear weapons attack.” So writes The Heritage Foundation in its preview of a newly updated documentary, “33 Minutes,” which warns Americans of what the U.S. government must do to keep us safe. Why that title? “Thirty-three minutes is the maximum time it would take a nuclear-tipped missile from the farthest point of the earth to reach the U.S.”

Momentum builds during a big week for tax reform

The White House to you
Thursday, November 30, 2017

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act moves toward the Senate floor Yesterday just after 3:00 p.m. EST, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders released a statement commending the Senate Budget Committee for its crucial vote to pass the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The committee’s decision clears the way for the full Senate to vote on the bill as soon as the end of the week.
“President Donald J. Trump applauds the Senate Budget Committee on taking an important step toward passing historic tax relief and reform,” said the statement. “The President looks forward to providing tax cuts for hardworking Americans by the end of the year.”
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act reduces taxes for families and individuals of all income levels, simplifies America’s complicated and lengthy tax code, and reduces taxes on U.S. businesses to allow them to compete – and win – on the global stage.
Read the full statement and learn more about President Trump’s principles for tax reform.
A sneak peek at the President’s speech today in Missouri
Today President Trump travels to St. Charles, Missouri, to speak to Americans of all stripes about the crucial need for tax reform. The President will talk about overtaxation, a phenomenon that hits small-business owners especially hard by stifling opportunities to grow their companies. President Trump will also address the merits of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which will allow more of these businesses to keep higher shares of their earnings and thrive in today’s ultracompetitive business environment.
St. Charles is a town of about 70,000 on the banks of the Missouri River. One of the oldest cities in the state, it’s the perfect place for President Trump to escape the Washington echo chamber and listen to the concerns of working Americans first-hand.
Congressional leaders join President Trump in the West Wing
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) met with President Trump yesterday in the Roosevelt Room to discuss a plan to keep the federal government open past a looming December 9 deadline. The meeting was intended to be a bipartisan discussion, but Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) ultimately chose not to attend.
“I think it's regrettable that our Democratic colleagues and leadership chose not to join us today,” said Speaker Ryan. “We have important work to do. We have big deadlines . . . That works needs to happen now.”

GOP should unite for legacy tax-reform vote

The White House to you
Thursday, November 30, 2017

“GOP SHOULD UNITE FOR LEGACY TAX-REFORM VOTE”
-Bernie Marcus in The Hill

Bernie Marcus, chairman of the Marcus Foundation and retired co-founder of The Home Depot, writes in The Hill that delivering tax relief to the American people is “a legacy for which every U.S. senator should be remembered.” Marcus suggests Republicans “focus on the bill, not the shills” and look at the facts: Doubling the zero tax rate, doubling the child tax credit, and expanding the 12 percent bracket would save middle-class taxpayers thousands per year.

“That’s a huge relief for the four-fifths of working Americans who live paycheck-to-paycheck,” says Marcus. “For many senators, this will be a legacy-cementing vote for which they will be remembered and thanked long after they’re gone

In The Wall Street Journal, Merck & Co. CEO Kenneth Frazier says two numbers deserve far more attention than they’ve gotten in this month’s tax debate: 36 and $510 billion. “Thirty-six is the number of formerly U.S.-based companies that moved their headquarters overseas between 2004 and 2016,” writes Frazier. “$510 billion left the U.S. economy in cross-border mergers and acquisitions” during the same period. His solution? A territorial tax system, as the Senate tax reform bill proposes.
On immigration, Mica Rosenberg and Reade Levinson of Reuters write that 29 police departments across the country have joined a special program allowing officers to be deputized to perform certain tasks of immigration agents. Trained by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement personnel, these officers vet arrested individuals that are suspected of being in the country illegally.

In economic news, CNBC reports that sales of new U.S. single-family homes increased 6.2 percent in October, “hitting their highest level in 10 years.” October marks the third consecutive month that new home sales have increased.

‘Tis the season! A photo essay in The New York Times captured the moment yesterday as First Lady Melania Trump unveiled this year’s White House Christmas decorations. The theme for the First Family’s first Christmas in office is “Time-Honored Traditions,” which “looks back at the 200 years of holiday celebrations” in the White House, writes Tanner Curtis.

A special message for the holiday season

The White House to you
Wednesday, November 29, 2017

A special message for the holiday season A few days ago, Americans counted our blessings as we sat down for Thanksgiving dinners with our families and friends across the country. Today, many will choose to go one step further in celebrating their good fortune by honoring #GivingTuesday, a global day of charitable giving.
This year’s #GivingTuesday is especially important. “Earlier this year, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria devastated communities across the southern United States and in the Caribbean, and vast wildfires ravaged California,” said President Donald J. Trump in a statement. “We saw millions of Americans lose everything, from homes to businesses . . . [to] the unbearable loss of loved ones.”
The President thanks all those who have contributed to charitable organizations this year, including our houses of worship. If you would like to take part in #GivingTuesday, please consider supporting one of the great organizations partnering with us to help communities rebuild: https://www.nvoad.org.
As the President said, “Together, we can ensure that the blessings of this holiday season are shared around the world.”
President Trump meets with members of the Senate Finance Committee
Yesterday, President Trump hosted Vice President Mike Pence and five members of the Senate Finance Committee at the White House for lunch in the Private Dining Room. The topic on everyone’s mind? “A tremendous tax cut – the biggest in the history of our country,” said President Trump.
The President reiterated his support for the tax bill proposed by Republican leadership and is pleased with the momentum it has inspired for passing crucial legislation well before the year’s end. As part of the Administration’s continued support, President Trump will join Senate Republicans today for lunch at the U.S. Capitol, where he’ll make the case for swift action.
Learn more about President Trump’s pro-job, pro-family, and pro-America principles for tax reform here.
Bonus: Read Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) op-ed on why he plans to vote for tax reform.
First Lady gives special thanks to Christmas volunteers
Yesterday, First Lady Melania Trump held a special gathering for volunteers who helped turn this year's White House Christmas theme, “Time-Honored Traditions,” into reality. A Gold Star Family Tree honoring service members is proudly on display in the White House East Wing, and historic pieces celebrating holiday traditions – including a nod to the first White House Christmas theme, 1961’s "Nutcracker Suite" – can be found throughout.
More than 150 volunteers came together from 29 states to assist with decorating and baking. The numbers tell the story best:

    • 31,000: Number of cookies baked
    • 53: Number of White House Christmas trees decorated
    • 1,000: Feet of garland strung
    • 12,000: Number of ornaments hung
The First Lady thanked the volunteers, who spent more than 1,600 hours bringing the First Family's first Christmas at the White House to life. She and the President look forward to hosting more than 25,000 visitors during the upcoming holiday season.

America is winning #CyberMonday, thanks to President Trump

The White House to you
Tuesday, November 28, 2017

“AMERICA IS WINNING THIS #CYBERMONDAY, THANKS TO PRESIDENT TRUMP”
-Jen Kerns in The Hill

There is “so much winning” this Cyber Monday as “the economy continues to boom under President Trump, and America is poised to break records again,” writes Jen Kerns in The Hill. Kerns notes this year’s Cyber Monday sales are predicted to be the highest in history because of the confidence Americans have in the direction of the economy.

With consumer confidence at a 17-year high and the unemployment rate at a 16-year low, the President is making good on his promise to return manufacturing jobs to the United States. Companies such as Toyota are planning to open factories here at home, leading Kerns to conclude that “the economy is booming and this holiday season, [President Trump] continues to make America great again.”

In The Weekly Standard, Shannen Coffin argues that President Trump has the law on his side with his appointment of Mick Mulvaney as Acting Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel “publicly released an opinion supporting the president’s designation,” writes Coffin, and that office “has long taken the position that the president can designate an acting official under the Vacancies Reform Act.”

Nine prominent economics experts wrote a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin published in The Wall Street Journal explaining why both the House and the Senate tax reform bills are “pro-growth.” Both bills would spur the investment and economic activity ultimately needed to drive down the cost of reform. A Wall Street Journal editorial citing the letter agrees on that point: “A mere four years of 3 percent growth – the U.S. historical norm – could fill a $1 trillion hole.”

Investor’s Business Daily says President Trump’s trip to Asia was a success, especially on the issue of trade. China announced on Thanksgiving that it has decided to “slash import taxes on some 187 consumer goods,” the editorial board explains.

Writing in Fox News, Chuck DeVore thinks President Trump’s “most significant contribution to a more prosperous America is also his least understood: his assault on the administrative state.” Only four times since 1960 has the tide of liberty managed to roll back government power. Should the President prevail, writes DeVore, the decade of growth that follows would almost certainly be unprecedented.

Tax reform in time for Christmas

The White House to you
Tuesday, November 28, 2017

Tax reform in time for Christmas With the holiday season upon us, President Donald J. Trump is working hard with Congress to cut taxes for middle-income families and fix our Nation's broken tax code in time for Christmas. The new bill – currently making its way through the Senate – will slash taxes by some $1.5 trillion over the next 10 years and is projected to boost household incomes significantly after nearly two decades of stagnation. The new code will allow families to spend more of their hard-earned dollars toward the success of their children, while restoring America's competitive business edge and stimulating job growth.
Today, the President is meeting to discuss the bill with Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Pat Toomey (R-PA), Rob Portman (R-OH), Tim Scott (R-SC) and John Cornyn (R-TX) of the Senate Finance Committee. The Administration is pleased with the growing momentum behind passing these historic tax reforms, and it looks forward to continuing to support the Senate in getting this important work done as quickly as possible.
President visits with service members on Thanksgiving
On Thanksgiving Day, President Trump traveled to Station Lake Worth Inlet in Palm Beach County, Florida, to visit Coast Guard service members and hosted a video teleconference with U.S. military personnel on missions abroad. The President spoke with members of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard gathered on the video conference from bases in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Turkey, as well as from ships in the middle of the ocean. President Trump expressed his gratitude on behalf of the American people for these heroes’ dedication to our country.

President Trump’s Key Immigration Promise on Track

The White House to you
Thursday, November 23, 2017

Capitol Hill Moves to Include More than $1 Billion in Funding for the Southern Border Wall
The Washington Times is reporting that “Senate Republicans included $1.6 billion for the first installment of President Trump’s border wall in the new homeland security spending bill they released Tuesday, keeping the president’s marquee immigration promise on track.”

This spending bill calls for physical barriers and border roads along the U.S.–Mexico border.

As Newt Gingrich writes for Fox News, the President has had a “historic impact on the federal court system [that] will help our nation prosper for decades to come.” Gingrich explains how the President is restoring the intended purpose of the federal judiciary — “to uphold the rule of law as outlined in the Constitution.”
In East Africa, U.S. airstrikes have killed more than 100 fighters who were “identified by the Pentagon as being affiliated with the Islamic militant group Shabab, continuing a stepped-up pace against targets in Somalia” under the President, according to The New York Times.

Federal prosecutors have upgraded the charges against Sayfullo Saipov, the alleged terrorist who drove a pickup truck into a crowded New York City bike path in October. He now faces a 22-count indictment. See more from The Washington Post here.

On the foreign policy front, Joseph DeTrani writes in an op-ed for The Washington Times about the encouraging signs in Asia following the President’s visit to Seoul, South Korea.

Gathering as Families, Giving Thanks as a Nation

The White House to youThursday, November  23, 2017

National Thanksgiving Turkey Pardoned in Rose Garden Yesterday, President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump participated in the time-honored tradition of the Presidential turkey pardoning in the Rose Garden. After a nationwide vote, a turkey named Drumstick received the official pardon – and the esteemed title of National Thanksgiving Turkey – while his friend Wishbone was named his alternate, should Drumstick be unable to fulfill his duties. Following the ceremony, both turkeys were escorted to Virginia Tech’s “Gobbler’s Rest” exhibit in Blacksburg, Virginia, where they joined last year’s turkeys for a well-deserved retirement. The turkeys will be cared for by students and veterinarians, and visitors can learn about Virginia Tech’s programs in poultry sciences and veterinary medicine.
Turning his attention from the National Thanksgiving Turkey, President Trump expressed his gratitude to the Armed Forces, law enforcement, and first responders for their service and sacrifice in defense of our nation, our freedom, and our flag.
“I’d also like to express my thanks to the wonderful citizens of our country – the people who care for our communities, raise America’s children, uphold our laws and our values, and make this amazing land into our national home,” said the President. “As we gather together with our families on Thanksgiving and give thanks for our many blessings, we are reminded of the national family to which we all belong as citizens of this incredible country.”

President Trump Proclaims National Day of Thanksgiving
President Trump proclaimed tomorrow, Thursday, November 23, 2017, as a National Day of Thanksgiving, encouraging all Americans to gather and offer a prayer of thanks to God for our many blessings. The President also called on Americans, in addition to rejoicing in precious time spent with loved ones, to find ways to serve and encourage each other in both word and deed.
“This Thanksgiving, in addition to rejoicing in precious time spent with loved ones, let us find ways to serve and encourage each other in both word and deed. We also offer a special word of thanks for the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, many of whom must celebrate this holiday separated from the ones for whom they are most thankful.”

Broken Tax Code Harms Competitive American Corporations
As the only former Fortune 500 CEO in Congress, Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) wrote in an op-ed for NBC News that America’s “international tax structure is jeopardizing domestic growth and crushing corporations’ ability to be globally competitive.” Fixing the tax code by Christmas, before it causes even greater harm to American workers and businesses in 2018, would be the "single greatest thing we can do to ignite economic growth next year."
"We need to change the tax code to grow the economy, put people back to work, increase wages, and over the long-term, help reduce the national debt," wrote Sen. Perdue. "Otherwise we will continue to be outpaced by our competitors and American workers will pay the ultimate price."

Tax Reform: Creating Jobs, Assisting Small Businesses

The White House to you
Wednesday, November 22, 2017

“OPIOID CRISIS COST $504B IN 2015, HIGHER THAN ONCE THOUGHT”
- Darlene Superville, The Associated Press

Darlene Superville of The Associated Press reports that the opioid epidemic “appears to be more expensive than previously thought,” according to a new analysis by the White House Council of Economic Advisers. The report estimates that the actual cost of the crisis in 2015 was $504 billion, which clocks in at “more than six times the most recent estimate.” The CEA explained the number is significantly larger because the epidemic has worsened at an alarming pace, with overdose deaths doubling in the past decade. The report comes a month after President Trump declared the opioid crisis a national public health emergency.

Regarding tax reform, Rep. John Katko (R-NY) writes via Syracuse.com that he voted for tax reform because he wants to create jobs, give his constituents a tax break, and support local businesses' efforts “to invest in Central New York and our workforce.” Rep. Katko says that manufacturers in his area “have long affirmed the need for comprehensive reforms,” which is why they’re backing the bill.

In economic news, Bloomberg’s Sho Chandra reports sales of existing U.S. homes rose 2 percent to a four-month high as buyers closed more deals in hurricane-hit Florida and Texas. "The momentum appears to be good,” said National Association of Realtors’ Chief Economist Lawrence Yun, adding that activity is “quickly bouncing back.”

On veterans’ health, Ben Kesling and Peter Nicholas of the Wall Street Journal write that Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin wants private-sector providers “to play a larger role in veterans’ health care.” His department is looking to make the VA’s hospital system more competitive, which would “give veterans greater choice over their health care.”

In news on the Islamic State, Bill Gertz of the Washington Free Beacon reports that a majority of regional branches or affiliates of ISIS and al Qaeda “have been suppressed, contained, or placed under pressure from global counterterrorism efforts, according to the U.S. Special Operations Command.”

Steps Toward a Denuclearized North Korea

The White House to you
Wednesday, November 22, 2017

President Trump Meets with Cabinet Yesterday, President Donald J. Trump met with his Cabinet to discuss a range of pressing domestic and foreign policy issues. The President instituted a crucial step toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula by designating North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, announcing that the Treasury Department will be imposing “the highest level of sanctions” on Pyongyang over a two-week period.
The Cabinet meeting also focused on a range of domestic policy issues, including the historic tax cuts bill passed by the House of Representatives last week. “We’re going to give the American people a huge tax cut for Christmas,” said President Trump. “Hopefully that will be a great, big, beautiful Christmas present.”
If the bill becomes law, the United States would go from being “one of the highest-taxed nations in the world to one of the lowest-taxed.” Tax reform comes amid the Administration’s continued efforts to reduce government spending. “We’ll be submitting plans on health care, plans on infrastructure, and plans on welfare reform – which is desperately needed in our country – soon after taxes,” President Trump said.
Trump Administration Hard at Work on 'the Crisis Next Door'
New data compiled by the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) reveals the opioid crisis in the United States is more severe than previously thought. Opioid-involved overdose deaths doubled in the past 10 years and quadrupled in the past 16 years, and drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death in the United States, outnumbering traffic crashes or gun-related deaths. President Trump has committed to deploying the tools of government to confront this intolerable epidemic head-on.
Learn more about the problem and the Trump Administration’s plan of attack here.
The White House Christmas Tree Has Arrived!
Yesterday afternoon, serenaded by Christmas carols, the National Christmas Tree Association presented the White House Christmas Tree to First Lady Melania Trump and Barron Trump at the North Portico. This year’s Christmas tree is a 19.5-foot balsam fir selected by White House Chief Usher Timothy Harleth. The tree was grown at Silent Night Evergreens in Endeavor, Wisconsin, and will reside in the Blue Room for the 2017 holiday season.
