‘On Tax Cuts, Trump Is The Modern JFK’

The White House to you
Saturday, December 16, 2017

‘On tax cuts, Trump is the modern JFK’
CNN
Stephen Moore, a CNN economic analyst, writes about the ways that President Trump “seems to share JFK’s wisdom” when it comes to tax cuts. Moore explains that when tax cuts were enacted following President John F. Kennedy’s death, “America experienced one of the greatest periods of prosperity in our history.” The same effect was later “duplicated when Ronald Reagan chopped the top income tax rate.”

Washington Examiner reports on the Trump Administration’s rollout of a “global campaign to combat those who overstay their visas in the US.” The Department of Homeland Security introduced new requirements today that will instruct “countries with high rates of citizens overstaying select visas in the U.S. to launch campaigns educating people against breaking U.S. immigration laws,” Anna Giaritelli writes.

The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board writes “The Internet Is Free Again,” hailing the Trump Administration’s move to kill Obama-era rules that established the Federal Communications Commission as a political gatekeeper. The Journal details the consumer benefits of this ruling, including the ways that it will help rural America.

Mark Hemingway of The Weekly Standard walks through an assortment of media blunders in their reporting of the President. Hemingway writes that “anonymous sources dominate Trump coverage,” which creates “a problem for readers, who should rightly be skeptical of information someone isn’t willing to vouch for by name.”

A column by Sal Nuzzo and Brandon Arnold in the Tampa Bay Times details how “tax reform is the right path forward for Florida.” They note that the President’s tax plan “aims to spark the economy,” “lower corporate income taxes,” and “reduce the incentive for businesses to relocate overseas, keeping jobs here in the United States.”

‘I don’t know if we’ll have any left to cut’

The White House to you
Saturday, December 16, 2017

‘I don’t know if we’ll have any left to cut’
President Donald J. Trump pulled out the ceremonial gold scissors yesterday to show Americans exactly what his Administration is doing to Washington’s vast regulatory state.
A few highlights from his speech:
  • In 1960, there were 20,000 pages of federal regulations; today, there are 185,000—a stack about as tall as one of the reporters covering yesterday’s speech. (He’s 6’3”.)
  • “We canceled or delayed over 1,500 planned regulatory actions, more than any previous president by far.”
  • The President’s simple message for agency heads: Slash even more red tape in 2018. “And that should just about do it. I don’t know if we’ll have any left to cut.”
  • One stat to remember: The Administration promised to cut 2 regulations for each new one added. Agencies blew that 2:1 goal out of the water, instead eliminating rules at a 22:1 clip.
  • Why it matters: “Reductions in regulation are happening now,” financial expert Peter Wallison wrote earlier this fall. “That’s why the markets are exuberant.”

Read the President’s full remarks.
It’s a good day to celebrate
Just as the Administration unveils its plan to continue pruning the administrative state next year, it’s time to commemorate 10 of our Nation’s most important Founding principles.
President Trump signed a proclamation last week that honors today as Bill of Rights Day, part of the larger Human Rights Week that began Monday. “We recognize the importance of the first 10 Amendments to our Constitution to protecting our liberty and freedom against the inevitable encroachment of government,” the President wrote. Our Founders “understood the fundamental truth that liberty is best secured when the state’s power is carefully limited.”
Read President Trump’s full proclamation.

The next generation of law enforcement leaders
This morning, President Trump addressed the 222 newest graduates of the FBI National Academy at a ceremony in Quantico, Virginia. He congratulated students for completing the 270th Session of the academy, a challenging 11-week professional course of study covering intelligence theory, terrorism, management, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication, and forensic science.
Included in this latest class are members of law enforcement agencies from the District of Columbia, 20 international countries, three military organizations, and four federal civilian organizations.

The fruit of chain migration

The White House to you
Wednesday, December 13, 2017

The fruit of chain migration
Mark Krikorian in National Review
Mark Krikorian writes in National Review that yesterday’s New York City bombing underscores the urgency of adopting a merit-based immigration system—not one based on a random visa lottery.

Krikorian reports that Bangladeshi jihadist Akayed Ullah came to America “on what amounts to a nephew visa.” What’s more, the family member he followed only received entry by virtue of winning the U.S. visa lottery. Krikorian quotes Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), who on the floor of the Senate last week asked, “Shouldn’t we have an immigration system that focuses on the needs of America’s workers and economy, not one that gives out green cards by random chance?” The answer is a resounding yes.

Blair Guild in CBS News reports on President Donald J. Trump signing the National Defense Authorization Act this afternoon, thereby approving $700 billion in funding for the U.S. military. "This legislation represents a momentous step toward rebuilding our military and securing the future for our children,” President Trump said.

The editorial board of the Richmond Times-Dispatch agrees that Republican tax reform will be good news for the middle class. “Once the reforms kick in next year . . . the myths about Republican tax reform will be demolished by reality,” as workers see paychecks expand and businesses boost hiring.

Wesley Pruden at The Washington Times says it’s been a “sad and extremely horrible week” for the media. Everyone makes mistakes, Pruden writes, but “sometimes the mistakes are not really mistakes, but failed attempts to get away with fudging the facts to make a point.” And the public notices when those mistakes always seem to drift to the left.

According to The Wall Street Journal’s James Freeman, “We’re certainly living in strange times when the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee is among the most media-friendly lawmakers in Washington.” Freeman suggests that times would be a little less strange if the major networks hesitated in airing these “fact-free allegations” against Rep. Adam Schiff’s (D-CA) political adversaries.

Lee Roop writes in AL.com that President Trump has made it official: “NASA will lead an effort to land humans on the moon” once again. The return to human spaceflight as a top priority is welcome news for the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

In one corner of Afghanistan, America is beating Islamic State

The White House to you
Wednesday, December 13, 2017

In one corner of Afghanistan, America is beating Islamic State
Michael Phillips in The Wall Street Journal
In a lengthy report for The Wall Street Journal, Michael Phillips writes that despite being overshadowed by high-profile battles in Syria and Iraq, “Afghan and U.S. special-operations troops this year have pushed back Islamic State in a monthslong offense.”

This progress against ISIS in the Achin region contrasts with the fight elsewhere in Afghanistan, Phillips reports. In other parts of the country, “the Taliban and other insurgent groups . . . live among civilians and are difficult to target.” American military personnel “estimate as many as 1,500 Islamic State fighters remain in Afghanistan, including areas along the Pakistan border that militants claim for their caliphate,” Phillips writes.

SpaceNews reports that President Donald J. Trump today signed his Administration’s first space policy directive. Space Policy Directive 1 “directs the NASA Administrator to lead an innovative space exploration program to send American astronauts back to the Moon, and eventually Mars,” Deputy White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley said in a statement.
In USA Today, George Mason Law Professor F.H. Buckley argues that the Republican tax bill is good news for the majority of middle-class Americans. Why? “It’s a jobs bill,” he says. “There’s a worldwide competition for investment dollars, and all other things being equal they’re going to flow to low-tax countries.”

Dave Boyer of The Washington Times reports that a Treasury Department analysis shows that the GOP’s proposed tax plan “would pay for itself and more, actually boosting revenue by $300 billion over 10 years.” Treasury’s numbers differ from that of a congressional forecast by taking into account the potential for stronger economic growth.

Washington Examiner's Naomi Lim writes about First Lady Melania Trump’s visit to hurricane-stricken areas of Texas with Second Lady Karen Pence last week. On Sunday, the First Lady “appealed to Americans to donate time and money this holiday season in order to alleviate some of the devastation experienced by those who continue to grapple with the impact of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria,” Lim reports.

Our long journey to the stars—and the Moon

The White House to you
Tuesday, December 12, 2017

Our long journey to the stars—and the Moon
Forty-five years ago today, NASA’s final Apollo mission landed on the surface of the Moon. No human has walked there since.
This afternoon, President Donald J. Trump will tell the country that it’s time to refocus our vision for American space exploration.
In signing Space Policy Directive 1 today—the first recommendation of the recently reconvened National Space Council—the President will shift NASA’s resources and attention toward the Moon and Mars. Given its relative closeness, the Moon in particular offers humans the best hope for long-term exploration and utilization.
President Ronald Reagan once eloquently captured the sweep of mankind as “his long climb from the swamp to the stars.” With President Trump’s order today, America commits itself once again to writing the next chapter of that story.
Watch the signing ceremony today at 3:00 p.m. EST.

‘The sacred birthright of equality’
President Trump listened closely as Reuben Anderson, Mississippi's first African-American Supreme Court justice, led a small tour group through the newly opened Mississippi Civil Rights Museum on Saturday.
"The [civil rights] movement was very uncomfortable," Museum Director Pamela Junior says, adding that guests should feel some of that discomfort to better understand what victims went through.
“The Civil Rights Museum records the oppression, cruelty and injustice inflicted on the African-American community,” President Trump said, as well as “the fight to end slavery, to break down Jim Crow, to end segregation, to gain the right to vote, and to achieve the sacred birthright of equality here.”
“Their memories are carved in stone as American heroes.”

Jobs report crushes expectations as hurricane impact fades
Akin Oyedele in Business Insider
“Job creation remained strong in the US even after deadly hurricanes slammed into the Southeast this fall and temporarily weakened hiring,” writes Akin Oyedele, senior markets reporter at Business Insider. The U.S. economy added 228,000 nonfarm payrolls in November – exceeding economists’ expectations – and retail hiring was strong ahead of the holiday season. The manufacturing sector added 31,000 jobs, bouncing back from a slump in 2016 caused by the impact of a stronger dollar on U.S. exports. The overall unemployment rate held at a 17-year low of 4.1 percent.

The Associated Press reports on First Lady Melania Trump’s visit to the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, where she privately greeted patients and their families, answered children’s questions about her family’s Christmas traditions, and read “The Polar Express” aloud to patients and their families.

The Hill reports that the President signed a stopgap funding bill on Friday to avoid a government shutdown as budget talks continue. The measure funds the government until December 22, providing two additional weeks for congressional leaders to negotiate.

Stephen Collinson writes at CNN that President Trump is a “keeper of promises,” and “a politician who actually does what he told voters he would do” by declaring Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and beginning preparations to move the U.S. embassy to the city.
Anna Giaritelli at the Washington Examiner reports that the Department of Homeland Security announced the creation of a Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office that “will oversee federal efforts to prevent terrorists from using chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons to attack the U.S. or its interests abroad.” According to Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, “DHS is moving towards a more integrated approach, bringing together intelligence, operations, interagency engagement, and international action.”

Let’s stay open for business

The White House to youSaturday, December  09, 2017

Let’s stay open for business
Last night, Congress passed a short-term funding measure that keeps the federal government open while lawmakers continue to work on a long-term budget deal.
President Donald J. Trump lent his support to that effort yesterday, hosting both Democratic and Republican congressional leaders in the Oval Office. Although Congress is ultimately responsible for reaching a compromise that keeps the government open into next year, the White House understands its important leadership role in outlining what a lasting solution must achieve.
“This is a time of great opportunity in this country,” said Vice President Mike Pence. “We're seeing growth at home, but we have many challenges abroad.” Press Secretary Sarah Sanders underscored that some funding priorities must transcend politics, including the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs.
Yesterday’s meeting at the White House was an encouraging sign that leaders on both sides of the aisle agree. “We're all here as a very friendly, well-unified group,” said President Trump. “We hope that we're going to make some great progress for our country.”

‘We welcome this courageous decision’
America’s alliances are important: They drive our ability to both defend the homeland and eliminate threats long before they reach our shores. And of America’s allies, Israel is especially crucial, partnering with the U.S. to share intelligence and other assets that keep us safe from terrorism.
So it’s no small matter that leaders across Israel quickly expressed support for President Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the country’s capital. “We’re profoundly grateful,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. “This decision reflects the President’s commitment to an ancient but enduring truth, to fulfilling his promises and to advancing peace.”
Danny Danon, Israel’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, echoed those remarks. “We welcome this courageous decision,” he said. “President Trump righted a historic wrong.”

WWJKD: What Would Jack Kemp do?
Vice President Pence joined the Jack Kemp Foundation’s annual award dinner last night, which honored Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) as this year’s recipient.
“Jack Kemp was a hero of mine,” the Vice President said. And he explained why Kemp, the late Republican statesman, should loom large over this month’s tax reform proceedings on Capitol Hill.
“What Jack Kemp understood was that a tax code is more than just an accounting document,” he said. “He knew better than most that it's really a statement of the values of our nation.”

Why President Trump is right to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital

The White House to you
Friday, December 08, 2017

PROMISE KEEPER: WHY PRESIDENT TRUMP IS RIGHT TO RECOGNIZE JERUSALEM AS ISRAEL’S CAPITAL
- Matthew Continetti in The Washington Free Beacon
Matthew Continetti, editor in chief of The Washington Free Beacon, writes that President Donald J. Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and his decision to move the U.S. embassy is “a common sense appraisal of the world.” But it is also “one of the boldest moves any U.S. president has made since the beginning of the Oslo ‘peace process’ in 1993.”

Continetti explains that “the warnings from Trump critics that his decision may wreck the peace process ring hollow,” as there is currently “no peace process to wreck.” Applauding President Trump’s acknowledgment of Israel’s “right to determine its own capital city,” Continetti concludes that the President's decision is “something to be proud of.”

Alice Stewart writes in CNN that President Trump is “following through with his commitment” to the American people by fulfilling a major campaign promise to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The President’s announcement affirms “the need for the peace process to move ahead” and makes it clear that this is the “right time and the right step to take,” Stewart writes.

On tax reform, Adam Michel of the Heritage Foundation argues in The National Interest that “American families could finally get a real raise” from the pro-growth policies in both the House and Senate tax reform bills. Third-party analyses project these reforms could lead to an economy “almost 3 percent larger at the end of ten years . . . [translating] to more than $4,000 dollars per household, per year.”

In economic news, Berkeley Lovelace, Jr., at CNBC reports that “hiring across the U.S. was 26 percent higher last month than a year earlier,” according to a LinkedIn Workforce Report. Year to date, the hiring rate in the U.S. has been “10.4 percent higher in 2017 than in 2016.” Reports from ADP and Moody’s Analytics also show that private payrolls increased by 190,000 in November.

Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT) praised President Trump in the Deseret News for remedying “one of the largest abuses of power foisted upon Utah.” Bishop thanked the President for revoking past misuse of the Antiquities Act, explaining that “we now have an administration that understands the importance of allowing local people to have a say.”

In national security news, Sen. David Perdue (R-GA) writes in NBC News that the visa lottery program “is tainted by fraud and abuse.” Following this past year’s Halloween terror attack perpetrated by a lottery visa recipient, “there is no doubt that it should be eliminated.”

‘Nothing more or less than a recognition of reality’

The White House to you
Friday, December 08, 2017

‘Nothing more or less than a recognition of reality’
President Donald J. Trump made headlines around the world yesterday by announcing the United States will officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The President also directed the State Department to begin preparations to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
“When I came into office, I promised to look at the world’s challenges with open eyes and very fresh thinking,” the President said. “Old challenges demand new approaches.”
The decision drew praise even from frequent critics of the Administration. National Review’s David French called it one of President Trump’s “best, most moral, and important decisions” that “strikes a blow against international anti-Semitism.”
“This is nothing more, or less, than a recognition of reality,” President Trump said.
“It is also the right thing to do.”

Remembering the second worst attack on American soil
Today marks the 76th anniversary of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor that claimed 2,403 American lives on a single day in 1941. The President’s latest video tells the story of that fateful event that plunged America into World War II.
“We remember the lives that were lost, the families torn from loved ones, and the heroes who rose to America’s defense,” the President said. “As the smoke billowed that day from our sinking ships, our entire nation rose up to show our enemies America’s unbending strength, might, and resolve.”

‘What it means to have hope’
Continuing to celebrate December’s spirit of giving, First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence visited hurricane-damaged areas of Texas yesterday to meet first responders, visit families in the process of rebuilding, and assist volunteers with their ongoing efforts to help victims. One family in particular, the Zamoranos, offers all of us a stirring example of courage this holiday season.
“I am so impressed by your positive attitudes and resilient spirit,” the First Lady said. “Your family is an example of what it means to have hope.”

A major announcement on Jerusalem

The White House to you
Thursday, December 07, 2017

Today at 1:00 p.m. EST, President Donald J. Trump will make a major announcement on Jerusalem. Watch live here at 1:00 p.m. EST.
-------------------
‘Our hearts are encouraged by the people of Texas’
For many Americans, December will be a month of rejuvenation before the New Year. But for families who lives were turned upside down by natural disasters in Texas, California, Florida, Puerto Rico, Louisiana, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, the road to recovery can be long and difficult—months after the news cycle has moved on to other stories.
First Lady Melania Trump and Second Lady Karen Pence will travel to Texas today to thank first responders, meet with affected families, and help volunteers at a local food bank. “Our hearts are encouraged by the people of Texas,” the Second Lady said, “and their continued enthusiasm to help each other pick up the pieces and rebuild after Hurricane Harvey.”
“As Christmas and the New Year approach, I encourage people to lend their time volunteering or providing financial support to those still reeling from the hurricanes,” the First Lady said.

The numbers suggest immigration enforcement is a win-win
Since the start of the Trump Administration, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) removal team has made 110,568 arrests—a year-over-year jump of 40 percent. This more aggressive approach to law and order comes with a twist: Apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border itself dropped this fiscal year.
This result bolsters President Trump’s core message on immigration. If America upholds the rule of law across the country, fewer immigrants will put their families at risk by crossing into the U.S. illegally. Preserving the integrity of a lawful system—including by building a physical barrier at the border—will save lives and restore the promise of a safer, happier, and more welcoming beginning for new Americans.
Regardless of ideology, that’s something we should all hope for.
See more of ICE’s “By the Numbers FY 2017” here.

‘It means a lot to us seeing the reform’
Too often when we talk about fixing the business tax code, folks in Washington picture big, multinational firms they’re familiar with: Apple, Walmart, Verizon, and so on. These companies matter, but the Fortune 500 only accounts for about 17 percent of the U.S. workforce.
Small businesses, on the other hand, employ nearly half of all American private-sector workers. The President wants to hear more of their stories. So he invited four families to join him at the White House yesterday to discuss how Congress and the Administration can help.
Their bios are impressive and distinctly American:

  • Jessica Unruh is a State Senator and coal-mining employee in North Dakota
  • Jason Beardsley is a former Special Forces veteran and co-owner of an apparel company
  • Aaron Williams is a marketing director at a creative company in Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Brian Steorts is a veteran of 15 years and owner of a business called Flags of Valor

  • “It means a lot to us seeing the reform,” Beardsley said. Read the President’s remarks here.

Trump announces he will shrink Bears Ears, Grand Staircase monuments in Utah

The White House to you
Wednesday, December 06, 2017

“Trump announces he will shrink Bears Ears, Grand Staircase monuments in Utah”
- Josh Siegel in Washington Examiners
Washington Examiner’s Josh Siegel reports that President Donald J. Trump has signed two proclamations that “will shrink Utah’s Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments, framing the decision as a sharp rebuke of former President Barack Obama's use of executive authority.”

President Trump explained the move as an important stand for local communities against federal overreach. “Families and communities of Utah know and love this land the best, and you know the best how to take care of your land and how to conserve this land for many generations to come,” he said.Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke emphasized the move would better preserve public access, conservation management, and opportunities for recreation at the two monuments.

Writing in The Salt Lake Tribune on the monument proclamations, Utah state leaders Greg Hughes and Wayne Niederhauser gave thanks to President Trump for following through on a promise to voters. “This is great news for the residents of southern Utah who depend on the use of public lands for their livelihoods and the Native Americans who depend on access to Bears Ears lands for their material and spiritual needs,” they write.

“Dow 24,000 is so last week — how about 25,000 by the end of THIS week?,” asks Shawn Langlois in Market Watch. “Wharton’s Jeremy Siegel, in our call of the day, told CNBC following last week’s milestone that the blue chips are poised to take out 25,000 in a matter of days, thanks mainly to the passage of Trump’s tax reform package,” Langlois writes.

In immigration news, Patrick Goodenough of CNS News reports that since October 1, there has been an 83 percent drop in refugee admittance to the U.S. compared to the first two months of the last fiscal year. This news comes as the Administration has decided to withdraw America from the U.N. global compact on migration, which U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley argued “is simply not compatible with U.S. sovereignty,” safety, or security.

Benedic Ippolito of the American Enterprise Institute shares an overlooked feature of the Senate’s tax reform bill: It could tell us whether Obamacare’s individual mandate actually works. Writing in AEIdeas, Ippolito explains that the legislation would repeal a one-size-fits-all federal solution and allow states to try their own reforms—“the natural experiment we need

Another day, another record

The White House to you
Wednesday, December 06, 2017

Another day, another record President Donald J. Trump has frequently mentioned that he hopes Republican tax cuts will deliver an early Christmas gift for all Americans this December.
On at least one count, it looks like Christmas may have come even sooner than expected.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed yesterday at a new record high of 24,290—the 64th record-setting close for the stock market under President Trump. This latest surge came as the market climbed more than 200 points to open trading yesterday morning, buoyed by news from over the weekend that Republican senators had voted to pass sweeping tax-reform legislation.
It’s clear that American businesses are hungry for a 21st-century tax code built for growth. Learn more.
Bonus: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell explains “Tax reform: What’s in it for you.”

Fact vs. fiction on federal monuments
President Trump visited Salt Lake City, Utah, yesterday to announce two major proclamations modifying the boundaries of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments.
As usual, there’s plenty of misinformation making the rounds. Here are a few quick facts to correct the record:
  • Myth: No president has ever shrunk a monument. Fact: Monuments have been shrunk at least 18 times—by presidents on both sides of the aisle.
  • Myth: This move will sell or close national parks. Fact: No national parks are under review, and the Administration adamantly opposes wholesale transfer of any public lands.
  • Myth: The review was done behind closed doors. Fact: Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke personally held more than 60 meetings with local stakeholders, including numerous tribal groups.
The media is exactly right on one point, though: This is a significant decision by the President worth reading about in full.

An important day you may have missed
Amid the recent headlines on tax reform, a solemn occasion may have slipped by unnoticed by many last Friday. President Trump proclaimed December 1, 2017, as World AIDS Day, a moment to “honor those who have lost their lives to AIDS [and] celebrate the remarkable progress we have made in combatting this disease.”
Ambassador-at-Large Deborah Birx, M.D., highlighted how U.S. leadership has been the difference maker. When the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) “began in 2003, only 50,000 people were receiving lifesaving antiretroviral treatment (ART) in sub-Saharan Africa. Today, PEPFAR supports more than 13.3 million men, women, and children on ART.”
