As a community organizer, President Obama learned the importance of bringing people together to talk about their experiences and their hopes for the future, and how to build plans to make positive change. He saw firsthand the power of people working together to make important, incremental changes to move the world as it is into the world as it should be.

In that spirit, President Obama hosted the first-ever Summit on Worker Voice last year, bringing together a diverse group of workers, employers, unions, organizers, advocates, academics, and business leaders to explore ways working Americans can experience the benefits of economic growth and make their voices heard for higher wages, safer working conditions, paid leave, and other improvements in the workplace.

But the President made clear that the work wasn't finished that day:

"This is the beginning of a conversation that I want to push for the next 15 months, through the end of my presidency… you own this thing. The deal is that I will work with you around the ideas that you identify. And we’ll work together. And hopefully this will be the start of reversing some trends -- both economic and cultural -- that have been around way too long."

It's been 12 months since the President called us to action, and since then we’ve all owned a piece of the effort to reverse those trends.
Organizations have released new tools and tried out new innovative models of expanding worker voice, leaders across the country have taken part in regional summits by elevating their stories, and workers nationwide have advocated for changes that make their workplace more equal, fair, and just.
For example, since the Summit, Caring Across Generations launched a coalition with Care.com and New America to focus on promoting the social and economic value of caregiving and lifting up new resources like the Care Index which indexes states by the cost, quality, and availability of care. Centro de Tabajadores Unidos en Lucha, a worker center in Minneapolis, won a union for about 600 janitors by pioneering a sector-wide strategy and convincing employers to take the plunge together. And the Department of Labor launched a soft beta prototype of www.worker.gov, an online tool to help workers understand their rights under federal worker protection statutes -- a tool developed directly in response to feedback at the Summit that resources were too inaccessible.
And these are just a few from the long list of examples of the incredible progress that has been made by partner organizations over the course of the last year.
The Administration has continued to build on its success -- after requiring contractors to notify employees of their collective action rights, granting collective bargaining rights for TSA employees, and finalizing a rule requiring federal contractors to issue paid sick leave for their employees.
But while we have made some important changes to the workplace, there is much work ahead. Change starts at the individual level; in conversations over social media, at the workplace, in meetings, and in town halls. It's our responsibility as a nation of workers and managers, leaders and community members to ensure we are all doing our part.

One year after the first-ever White House Summit on Worker Voice, we commend everyone for doing their part, we thank you for your partnership, and we encourage everyone to keep on working to enhance the voice of every worker.

Today, the White House will host its final National Disability Employment Awareness Month event and celebrate the strides we have made to create a more inclusive federal workforce. Ahead of this event, I'm proud to announce important progress toward that effort.

In 2010, President Obama challenged the federal government to hire 100,000 people with disabilities within five years. Not only did we reach the goal between 2011 and 2015, we surpassed it. Since then, the federal government has hired more than 154,000 permanent and temporary employees with disabilities, more than 109,000 of whom are permanent hires.

Tune in here to follow along today's event.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of leadership, managers, and staff in agencies big and small to commit to inclusive recruitment, hiring, and retention practices, there are now more people with disabilities in the federal workforce than at any time in the past 35 years. This shows what government can do when agencies come together to make sure that everyone in our country has a fair shot - not only to achieve their dreams, but to serve the country we all love.

Everyone benefits when our government reflects the full talents and diversity of the American people, so the fulfillment of the President's goals marks an important step forward.

With that said, it is just one step toward creating a truly inclusive workforce that represents the American people.

We must all continue to work together -- the federal government, and state and local governments, together with the private and not for profit sectors -- to ensure that the only limits to people's success are the limits they place on themselves -- not an inaccessible job posting, discriminatory hiring practices, or a lack of workplace accommodations. We have a lot more work to do, so I challenge you to take a fresh look at all of your workplace's practices and procedures and make sure they are inclusive of working families, people with criminal records who have earned second chances, and others who experience barriers to employment.

The kind of progress we want to see starts with us.

How we can help students succeed together

Born and raised in Seat Pleasant, Maryland, I grew up in a community with higher rates of poverty and lower graduation rates than most of the state. For me, having the support of my mom was critical, but the support of mentors like the people I met at the local Boys and Girls Club, or people at my community activity center, or my youth basketball coach also helped ensure that I was able to graduate from high school and pursue my dreams.

That’s why I’m proud to be part of the My Brother’s Keeper Success Mentors Initiative, which helps support kids in communities like the one I grew up in. Check out this video to learn more:

The MBK Success Mentor Initiative helps connect caring mentors with students in sixth and ninth grades in high-need school districts across their communities. Our goal is to provide mentors to more than 250,000 students over the next two years and ensure that they have they support need to stay in school and achieve their dreams.

Every kid deserves an opportunity to succeed. Unfortunately, every year, over 6 million children miss at least a month of school, putting them at significant risk of falling behind and not graduating from high school. And one in three kids grow up without a mentor. By supporting My Brother’s Keeper and the Success Mentor Initiative, I’m proud to help change those statistics so that all kids have the support they need to make sure they are in school and can reach their potential.

Hanging on a wall outside the Oval Office, there’s a framed letter from a woman named Natoma Canfield.

For years, Natoma did everything right. She bought health insurance and paid her premiums on time. But one day, the fear of so many became her reality: She was diagnosed with cancer. She fought for her health and had been living cancer-free for some time, but her insurance company kept raising her insurance rates, year after year. She needed the coverage, but she couldn't afford it. So she had to surrender her health plan and live merely on the hope that she would stay healthy.

She shared her story in a letter to President Obama in 2009. In the following year, during the heated political fight to pass the health care law, President Obama carried Natoma’s letter with him every day as a reminder that health care reform would help change the lives of millions of people who were clinging to hope.

President Obama will be talking about people like Natoma today in Miami at 1:55 pm ET: the brothers and sisters, moms and dads, and sons and daughters across America whose lives have been improved, and even saved, because we worked together to pass and implement the Affordable Care Act.

After more than six years of this landmark law, let’s look back at the progress we’ve made:

Twenty million Americans have gained health coverage -- not counting the 3 million more children gaining coverage during this period of time. More than 90 percent of Americans have health insurance for the first time ever. Up to 129 million people who could have otherwise been denied insurance because of a preexisting condition now have access to coverage -- even as we have seen the slowest growth in health care prices in 50 years. And, the quality, coordination, and effectiveness of the health care we receive has improved.

Just last year, Natoma wrote another letter. She thanked the President for the Affordable Care Act and told him that she’s remained cancer-free. Her note now joins a collection of letters to the President from people who have been helped by the law. People like Astrid from North Carolina, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was able to get the surgery she needed. Or Ann Marie from Connecticut who was able to detect an early stage of breast cancer thanks to better preventive care.

As someone who has worked alongside the President, I can tell you that these are the letters that inspired him to put so much work into making health care reform a reality.

So read these letters -- and tune in today to hear how far we’ve come since we passed the Affordable Care Act, and what more is needed to further improve the health of the nation.

I'm a 19-year-old studying at Duke University. I'm the same age that my mom was when she made the sacrifice to drop out of college to care for me and my siblings, so that we could have a shot at a better life than she had.

I was born to an alcoholic father and a teenage mother in a rough neighborhood in South Carolina. Growing up in our three-bedroom trailer, I knew that success wasn’t going to come easy for me.

But I had the support of my mom and stepdad, who both worked over 60 hours a week in their manufacturing jobs to save for our education. During the summers while they were at work, they took us to read books at the public library, instilling in us a love for learning.

I also had the encouragement of my elementary school teachers, who looked past the color of my skin and endured my "problem child" attitude because they saw that I had potential and could excel in our school's gifted programs. And when it came time to apply to college, I had high school teachers who encouraged me to reach for my dream schools.

For me and so many students like me, graduating from high school is a full-circle moment. It’s a manifestation of the unflinching sacrifice that my parents made to get me there. And it’s an affirmation of the American idea that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can build a future better than the conditions you were born into.

That’s why I’m proud to help announce that, under President Obama, more students are graduating high school than ever before -- reaching a record new high of 83 percent.

The truth is, my generation has seen things steadily get better the last eight years. Under President Obama, the graduation rate has gone up for all types of students, and the graduation gap is closing for students of color, low-income students, and students with disabilities. College is more accessible for so many thanks to increased Pell Grants and easier ways to apply for federal financial aid through FAFSA. With the help of financial aid, I’m able to study at a top-tier school without worrying about its costs.

I know that it’s only through the promise of education that my story is possible. That’s why I plan to devote my career to public service so I can work to keep improving our education system. And that’s why I'm so proud to have a president who believes that if we work together, we can ensure that same promise for every kid, no matter who they are or where they come from.

So I hope you’ll join in celebrating all the progress we’ve made for students like me by tuning in to President Obama’s remarks today at 11:25 am ET.

When we are brave enough to acknowledge our greatest challenges, we can solve our biggest problems and move toward a brighter future, together. Yesterday, President Obama participated in The White House Frontiers Conference to discuss how innovation and technology can help solve our greatest social problems. For the past two years, community members, activists, and organizers have been doing exactly that, pushing for social justice and urgent police reforms across the country. This movement has been shining a light on one of our greatest challenges, and in turn, has been busy working toward numerous policy changes and legislative actions. Since the beginning, activists everywhere, from Ferguson to Cleveland, as well as researchers, scholars, and law enforcement practitioners, have identified transparent and thorough data as part of this process. The lack of trust many of our communities have in systems of law enforcement cannot be ignored–and stronger data, no matter how revealing, will be essential to us correcting course and solving this issue. Data that reflects the reality of all our communities - especially those disproportionately affected by these issues - legitimizes our stories and our existence, as well as enables our collective pathway forward to find solutions together with our institutions.
While there still remains great progress to be made, open data projects from the White House have set us on a more transparent, clear path. We cannot solve problems we do not name, and the White House Police Data (PDI) and Data Driven Justice (DDJ) Initiatives have helped us name the challenges and accurately assess their scale for the past year. In that time alone, important progress has been made: More than simple commitments, local police departments have already taken actions to address the findings, pushing us forward in progress.

Working directly with police departments to collect the most critical statistics on community interactions, the Police Data Initiative has partners in 129 jurisdictions so far and reaches over 44 million Americans. The Data Driven Justice Initiative has partnered with 120 and counting jurisdictions and reaches 91 million Americans. These initiatives match the effort made by activists and journalists alike to track more things that matter to our neighborhoods–and provide a level of federal support that increases our ability to ensure the fullness of our story is told.

Across the nation, activists, journalists, concerned community members, and forward thinking leaders will continue to strive for greater accountability, transparency, and safety in our neighborhoods. As we press forward together, we know that these efforts to increase the use of data will be critical levers in healing our collective wounds, solving our greatest challenges, and reaching the more inclusive future for which we strive.
