Secretary Pompeo: ‘Real Progress’ Being Made Toward Trump-Kim Summit

The White House to you
Friday, June 01, 2018

Secretary Pompeo: ‘Real Progress’ Being Made Toward Trump-Kim Summit
“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that the United States and North Korea have made ‘real progress’ in the last three days toward setting the conditions that would allow President Trump and leader Kim Jong Un’s summit to move forward,” The Hill reports. “Pompeo said he’s been ‘very clear’ about the U.S. objective of denuclearization in exchange for a ‘brighter path’ for North Korea,” Rebecca Kheel writes.
------------
Reuters reports that U.S. consumer spending is accelerating, signaling a strong job market, according to the Department of Commerce. “U.S. consumer spending posted its biggest gain in five months in April, a further sign that economic growth was regaining momentum early in the second quarter,” Lucia Mutikani writes.
------------
In The Wall Street Journal, James Freeman reports that “the number of small companies raising wages hit a record high in the U.S. this month,” according to a new National Federation of Independent Business employment survey. Freeman adds that “35% of owners of small firms report increasing labor compensation, the highest percentage since NFIB started asking about it in 1986.”
------------
“President Donald J. Trump has had a great 2018 but you would not know it if you listened to cable talking heads,” Corey Lewandowski writes in The Hill. “President Donald Trump is leading America to a more peaceful world and a prosperous America with his ‘America First’ policies.”
------------
In The Washington Post, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley writes that “American taxpayers have invested more than $11 billion [in South Sudan] since its independence. But we have lost patience with the status quo. We must change course if we are to save a generation of South Sudanese and give them hope for a better future.”

Giving terminally ill patients a chance, here at home

The White House to you
Friday, June 01, 2018

The White House • May 31, 2018

The Day Ahead

President Donald J. Trump travels to Texas, where he will meet with family members and community leaders affected by this month's tragic shooting at Santa Fe High School. Read the President's May 18 Proclamation honoring victims.
Giving terminally ill patients a chance, here at home

An estimated 609,640 Americans will die from cancer alone in 2018, according to the National Cancer Institute. Before yesterday, the options for terminally ill patients who had exhausted all available treatments were extremely limited. Only 3 percent of cancer patients today are enrolled in clinical trials for new medication, for instance.
With President Trump's signature, this bleak picture changes. The "Right to Try" law he signed yesterday gives more than 1 million Americans who die each year from terminal illnesses a new tool to make potentially lifesaving treatment decisions. The act amends Federal law to allow certain unapproved, experimental drugs to be administered to terminally ill patients who have exhausted all approved treatment options and are unable to participate in clinical drug trials.
"People who are terminally ill should not have to go from country to country to seek a cure," President Trump says. "I'd see people-friends of mine, and other people I'd read about, where they'd travel all over the world looking for a cure. And we have the best medical people in the world."
President Trump fulfills his promise to expand options for terminally ill Americans.

250 kids join President Trump on the South Lawn
Sports participation and physical activity are crucial for child development, supporting personal and social growth, lifetime health and fitness habits, and a competitive spirit. Children that play sports have higher educational achievement, earn higher incomes as adults, and have improved mental health.
Each president since Dwight Eisenhower has convened a Council on Fitness to focus on various sports, nutrition, and well-being initiatives. President Trump has given his Council a clear purpose: to reverse the declining trend of youth sports participation and to ensure that all American children are given the opportunity to compete.
To introduce his intended Council appointees, the President invited several hundred children, parents, and coaches to the White House for a field day on the South Lawn. Athletes such as Mariano Rivera, Herschel Walker, and Misty May-Treanor joined youth participants in activities ranging from flag football to volleyball.

President Trump Signs ‘Right to Try,’ Says It Will Save ‘Tremendous Number of Lives’

The White House to you
Thursday, May 31 , 2018

President Trump Signs ‘Right to Try,’ Says It Will Save ‘Tremendous Number of Lives’
“President Trump on Wednesday signed into law a bill that would allow those with potentially terminal diseases to try experimental treatments and bypass the U.S. Food and Drug Administration,” Brooke Singman reports for Fox News.
“As I proudly sign this bill, thousands of terminally ill Americans will have the help, the hope, and the fighting chance -- and I think it’s going to be better than chance -- that they will be cured, that they will be helped, that they will be able to be with their families for a long time,” the President said. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross writes in Financial Times that the Trump Administration “supports the new General Data Protection Regulation’s goal of protecting personal online data while continuing to enable transatlantic data exchange.” Secretary Ross underscores that “we must find a way to implement GDPR without creating undue barriers.”
------------
President Trump’s tax cuts, “which prompted hundreds of companies to dole out $2,000 bonuses and wage hikes,” has now also prompted several states to propose reducing taxes, Paul Bedard reports for the Washington Examiner. “According to the annual ‘State of the States Report’ from the American Legislative Exchange Council, 11 governors proposed tax cuts, a sizable shift from past years,” Bedard writes.
------------
“President Trump's trade team is returning to our founding fathers' approach to economic development. They view national strength as measured by what we can produce, not just what we can consume,” writes Michael Stumo, CEO of the Coalition for a Prosperous America, via Syracuse.com.

China has consistently taken advantage of America's economy

The White House to you
Thursday, May 31 , 2018

The White House • May 30,2018
The Day Ahead

President Donald J. Trump will sign the Right to Try Act, which will give terminally ill patients greater access to experimental treatments. Watch live at 12:15 p.m. ET.

The White House will host a celebratory "field day" to encourage youth sports participation and introduce intended appointees to the Presidential Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Watch live at 3:30 p.m. ET.
China has consistently taken advantage of America's economy
For many years, China has used unfair trade and industrial practices—including "dumping," discriminatory barriers, forced technology transfer, over capacity, and industrial subsidies—that champion Chinese firms and make it impossible for many U.S. firms to compete on a level playing field.

The costs of these policies to American industry keep piling up
:
China's intellectual property theft costs U.S. innovators billions of dollars each year
China accounts for 87 percent of the counterfeit goods seized coming into America
Beijing has banned imports of U.S. agricultural products such as poultry, cutting off America's ranchers and farmers
The United States charges a 2.5 percent tariff on Chinese cars, while China maintains a 25 percent tariff on cars from America
President Trump has taken long overdue action to address the source of the problem. Part of the solution includes imposing a 25 percent tariff on $50 billion of goods imported from China that contain industrially significant technology, including those related to the "Made in China 2025" program. The Administration is also implementing specific investment restrictions and enhanced export controls.
Over Memorial Day weekend, President Trump greeted another released American. Late Saturday, the President welcomed Josh Holt to the Oval Office following Holt's return from a Venezuelan prison.
With Holt home, 17 Americans held abroad have been released during the Trump Administration. "The United States thanks the Maduro regime for releasing the unjustly detained United States citizen, Joshua Holt, and his Venezuelan wife," Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement. His return "does not change United States policy" toward Venezuela.

Federal employment must be earned, not given
Firing bad Federal employees is prohibitively difficult. It takes 6 months to a year to remove a tenured Federal employee for poor performance—plus an average of 8 more months to resolve appeals. Such employees are 44 times less likely to get fired or laid off than private-sector workers.
Through an Executive Order, President Trump is making changes to strengthen the merit system and streamline the removal of poor performers. As part of the new policy, agencies will be required to report information on the disciplinary actions and management of poor performers to the Office of Personnel Management for publication.

HHS Pushes Back Against Narrative That It ‘Lost’ 1,500 Alien Children

The White House to you
Wednesday, May 30, 2018

HHS Pushes Back Against Narrative That It ‘Lost’ 1,500 Alien Children
“The federal agency responsible for caring for unaccompanied alien children is pushing back against accusations that it has lost nearly 1,500 of them, knocking critics that ‘confuse and spread misinformation’ about the issue,” Will Racke writes in The Daily Signal.

“These children are not ‘lost’; their sponsors—who are usually parents or family members and in all cases have been vetted for criminality and ability to provide for them—simply did not respond or could not be reached when this voluntary call was made,” Health and Human Services Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan said. Click here to read more.
------------
“Some liberal activists and journalists scrambled Sunday and Monday to delete tweets and social media posts incorrectly linking the Trump administration to an old photo of detained illegal-immigrant minors being held in a cage,” Victor Morton writes in The Washington Times. “The 2014 shot was actually taken during the Obama administration.”
------------
“The Trump administration has shut down an Obama-era loophole that let immigrants who otherwise could not legally enter the U.S. claim a free pass by saying they were ‘entrepreneurs,’" the Washington Examiner reports. “The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, part of the Department of Homeland Security, announced an end to the program, claiming former President Barack Obama overstepped his powers in creating it,” Paul Bedard writes.
------------
Last week, “President Trump signed the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act — the first significant financial regulatory reform bill to become law since the crisis-era Dodd-Frank Act,” John A. Allison and Lydia Mashburn write in The Washington Times. “The changes primarily give community banks relief from regulations — which makes sense since they weren’t the drivers of the financial crisis and are crucial for economic growth.”

The heroes who rest in these hallowed fields

The White House to you
Wednesday, May 30, 2018

The White House • May 29, 2018
The Day Ahead
President Donald J. Trump is meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Francis Collins in the Oval Office to discuss NIH research initiatives, including work on opioids.
The heroes who rest in these hallowed fields
President Trump visited Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia yesterday to commemorate Memorial Day and pay tribute to those who lost their lives defending America. "The heroes who rest in these hallowed fields—in the cemeteries, battlefields, and burial grounds near and far—are drawn from the full tapestry of American life," he said.
Memorial Day is an occasion to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As we remember those warriors, it is also a moment to consider how we can make life better for all of America's heroes in uniform, including our veterans.
In the near future, President Trump will take an important step toward correcting how the United States treats its veteran population. He will sign the VA MISSION Act, which will transform the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) into a high-performing and integrated healthcare system for the 21st century by putting choice at the core of the VA program.
More: This Memorial Day, a win for America's veterans
Taxpayers, unions, and the Federal workforce
Federal agencies pay for union negotiators' salaries, so it hurts taxpayers when bargaining drags on for years. The salaries for union negotiators totaled $16 million in 2016 alone. And more than 470 Veterans Affairs employees spend 100 percent of their duty hours working for a labor union instead of serving veterans—including 74 full-time nurses.
A new Executive Order from President Trump will require agencies to negotiate better union contracts more efficiently and transparently. It will eliminate years of costly drawn-out bargaining by encouraging agencies to conclude labor negotiations in less than a year. Moreover, any Federal employees authorized to act on behalf of unions will be permitted to spend no more than 25 percent of their time on union business.
Learn more about President Trump's Civil Service reforms that put taxpayers first.

Rolling back 'the disaster of Dodd-Frank'

The White House to you
Saturday, May 26, 2018

The White House • May 25, 2018
The Day Ahead
President Donald J. Trump will deliver the commencement address to the U.S. Naval Academy's 2018 graduating class in Annapolis, Maryland. Watch live at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Rolling back 'the disaster of Dodd-Frank'
Dodd-Frank unfairly harmed the community banks that serve as the backbone of small business in America. While the big financial institutions used their vast resources to navigate Dodd-Frank's costly and complex regulations, the number of community banks in the United States decreased by 2,000 over the past 8 years.
Yesterday, rural America and small towns got a boost. Thanks to the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief, and Consumer Protection Act that President Trump signed into law, community banks and credit unions will be freed of unnecessary regulatory costs and able to direct more lending to small businesses and consumers. That change is especially crucial for local businesses, many of whom have few other options for credit.
"Today's legislation is the next step in America's unprecedented economic comeback," President Trump said. "As a candidate, I pledged that we would rescue these community banks from Dodd-Frank—the disaster of Dodd-Frank—and now we are keeping that commitment."
Watch: President Trump's full remarks at the signing ceremony
'This time, we will not only plant our flag'
"This time, we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprint. We will establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars," President Trump says about the next chapter of U.S. space exploration. In an effort led by Vice President Mike Pence, the Administration is reforming out-of-date space policies, already taking significant steps to refocus the Nation's space strategy.
President Trump's Space Policy Directive - 2, signed yesterday, ensures America's place as a leader in space commerce—a crucial frontier with stiff global competition. The Directive sets executive branch policy to ensure that any enforced regulations are promoting economic growth, minimizing uncertainty for taxpayers and industry, protecting national security, and encouraging American leadership.
Within 30 days, for example, the Commerce Secretary is directed to submit a plan for creating a "one-stop shop" within the Commerce Department for handling all commercial space flight activities.

The U.S. Has the Leverage with Iran and North Korea

The White House to you
Friday, May 25, 2018

The U.S. Has the Leverage with Iran and North Korea
In The Washington Times, Hoover Institution Senior Fellow Victor Davis Hanson argues that the United States has “enormous leverage” in its negotiations with both Iran and North Korea. “Global sanctions can wreck the relatively small and vulnerable Iranian and North Korean economies,” he writes. “For all their obnoxious bluster, the rogue governments of North Korea and Iran are more vulnerable than ever.” Click here to read more.

The Wall Street Journal editorial board writes on “the art of the banking deal,” explaining that the Dodd-Frank reform legislation President Trump signed today had the support of 33 Democrats in the House and 16 in the Senate. This bipartisan backing proves just “how onerous the Dodd-Frank regime is. This is one more assist to economic growth that never would have happened if Hillary Clinton were President.”
------------
“President Donald Trump signed a full posthumous pardon for former heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson in a surprise Oval Office ceremony alongside actor Sylvester Stallone, former heavyweight boxer Lennox Lewis, and others,” Alexander Mallin reports for ABC News. “It's my honor to do it. It's about time,” President Trump said.
------------
The New Hampshire Union Leader’s editorial board praised Congress for passing legislation that gives terminally ill patients the right to try experimental drugs without government interference. After the FDA deems a drug is safe, terminally ill patients will be allowed to use it while bypassing tests for its efficacy—a process that can take years. The bill is on its way to President Trump’s desk for his signature.

CNBC reports that Delta Air Lines will fly nonstop from the U.S. to India for the first time in a decade after the Trump Administration put to rest a bitter dispute between American carriers and three Persian Gulf airlines. Delta CEO Ed Bastian credited the Trump Administration for the restored service to India.

President Trump's letter to Kim Jong Un

The White House to you
Friday, May 25, 2018

The White House • May 24, 2018
President Trump's letter to Kim Jong Un

MS-13 is a threat to American communities
President Trump is committed to protecting our communities

from the violence of MS-13, a transnational gang with the motto "kill, rape, control." The threat from MS-13 is no small problem: There are more than 10,000 members in the United States and more than 30,000 worldwide. The gang is active in at least 40 states, as well as our Nation's capital.
"You said the other day that these individuals are animals," Evelyn Rodriguez, whose daughter was killed by MS-13 in 2016, said to President Trump. "You're correct. They are animals in how they kill, how they get these kids and they torture them. No child should ever, ever have to suffer. As parents, we have to endure that pain, that numbness every day of our lives."
The Administration is fighting back on all fronts. ICE Homeland Security Investigations arrested nearly 800 MS-13 members and associates in fiscal year 2017—an 83 percent increase from the year before. The Department of Justice has worked with partners in Central America to secure criminal charges against more than 4,000 of the gang's members.
Ultimately, it is up to Congress to act. "I am calling on the Congress to finally close the deadly loopholes that have allowed MS-13, and other criminals, to break into our country," President Trump said.
'Welcome aboard and welcome to the good fight'
Many American college students are graduating this month, and those at our Nation's military academies are no different. Vice President Mike Pence gave a commencement address yesterday to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's Class of 2018.
"On behalf of your Commander-in-Chief: Welcome aboard and welcome to the good fight," the Vice President said. "Truth is, you assume your watch at a time when your leadership and your service is needed more than ever before, because in our ever-shrinking world, more and more of the threats to the American people are local."

President Trump Lambastes MS-13: “They’re Animals, Animals.”

The White House to you
Thursday, May 24 , 2018

President Trump Lambastes MS-13: “They’re Animals, Animals.”
At a roundtable today in Nassau County, New York, President Donald J. Trump said that “he would slash foreign aid to countries that allow members of violent street gangs like MS-13 into the US,” the New York Post reports. “We are going to deduct a rather large amount of money from what we give them. They don’t want the people we are getting in their country,” the President said.
------------
The Trump Administration is set for another year of regulation trimming, according to Federal "regulatory czar" Neomi Rao, who outlined her office's Spring 2018 agenda to The Washington Free Beacon. "This spring agenda shows that this administration is well on its way to having another very strongly deregulatory year," Rao said, anticipating “pretty substantial cost savings.”
------------
President Trump’s approach to the trade deficit “could change the world,” Sandeep Gopalan writes in The Hill. “If Trump’s aggressive China gambit alters international trade, it will deliver a windfall for his supporters in the form of jobs, revitalized communities and related benefits,” Gopalan explains.
------------
Star Parker reports for Townhall that White House Senior Adviser Jared Kushner deserves “much of the credit for raising the profile on the importance” of prison reform and for “recruiting the broad base of support.” The legislation Kushner has advocated for “establishes new tools for prison management to conduct ongoing risk assessments of each prisoner, evaluating the likelihood of the prisoner recommitting a crime,” Parker writes.
------------

In The Washington Post, Hugh Hewitt describes President Trump’s massive impact on the Federal bench. “Someday, conservative critics of President Trump will have to reconcile their vehement opposition to him with their love of the Constitution,” Hewitt argues.

President Trump to talk immigration, MS-13 in New York

The White House to you
Thursday, May 24 , 2018

The White House • May 23, 2018
The Day Ahead
President Donald J. Trump will visit the Morrelly Homeland Security Center in Bethpage, New York, for a roundtable on immigration and MS-13. Watch live at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Ending taxpayer support of the abortion industry
President Trump spoke at Susan B. Anthony List's 11th Annual Campaign for Life Gala last night. Susan B. Anthony List is the Nation's largest pro-life organization with more than 600,000 members. "When I ran for office, I pledged to stand for life. And as President, that's exactly what I've done," President Trump told the group last night.
The Trump Administration is preserving the sanctity of life with policies that end taxpayer support of the abortion industry. Regulations proposed this week from the Department of Health and Human Services would require clear physical and financial divisions between programs that receive Title X family planning funding and programs that perform or support abortion as family planning.
The President's defense of American values includes pro-life priorities—and much more. In defense of religious liberty, the Administration issued conscience regulations that protect healthcare providers such as the Little Sisters of the Poor from having to choose between violating their moral beliefs or shutting their doors.

President Trump's 'dramatic and positive' achievement
South Korean President Jae-in Moon visited the White House yesterday, speaking with President Trump about recent developments in North Korea. The US-South Korea bilateral comes weeks before President Trump's planned summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore.
"President Trump has been able to achieve this dramatic and positive change that you see right now," President Moon said. "There have been many agreements between the United States and North Korea previously, but this will be the first time that there will be an agreement between the leaders."
President Trump emphasized that next month's summit is contingent on North Korea's willingness to engage on key issues, including denuclearization. "There are certain conditions that we want, and I think we'll get those conditions. And if we don't, we don't have the meeting," President Trump said. "It has a chance to be a great, great meeting for North Korea and a great meeting for the world."

Optimism About Availability of Good Jobs Hits New Heights

The White House to you
Wednesday, May 23, 2018

Optimism About Availability of Good Jobs Hits New Heights
“Optimism about the availability of good jobs has grown by 25 percentage points since Donald Trump was elected president,” according to a new Gallup survey. “With unemployment continuing to drop, Americans now survey the job market with a higher level of confidence that jobs are available,” Jim Norman reports.    Click here to read more.

“Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave Iran’s government an ultimatum and its people an assurance Monday in laying out the Trump administration’s agenda after pulling out of the 2015 nuclear deal with the Islamist regime,” Fred Lucas writes in The Daily Signal. “The sting of sanctions will be painful if the regime does not change its course,” Secretary Pompeo said.
------------
The New York Post editorial board argues that with the new Iran strategy, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo “made clear that this administration means to not just turn its back on the Obama deal but also to correct its substantial flaws.”
------------
In Politico, Cristiano Lima reports that “the Treasury Department on Tuesday unveiled fresh sanctions on five Iranians it said provided military expertise to Houthi rebels in Yemen ‘on behalf’ of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that the “United States will not tolerate Iranian support for Houthi rebels who are attacking our close partner, Saudi Arabia.”

In the Detroit Free Press, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt announces that the EPA “will kick off the agency’s first-of-its-kind National Leadership Summit on PFAS”—a group of man-made chemicals that help save lives but also may cause health risks as they linger in the environment.

'Our enemies will take note: Gina is tough'

The White House to you
Wednesday, May 23, 2018

The White House • May 22, 2018
The Day Ahead
President Donald J. Trump hosts South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the White House to discuss recent developments in North Korea.
President Trump will speak tonight at the Susan B. Anthony List's 11th Campaign for Life Gala in Washington. Watch live at 7:30 p.m. ET.
'Our enemies will take note: Gina is tough'
Gina Haspel was sworn in as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency yesterday. A three-decade veteran of the Agency with seven field tours under her belt, Director Haspel was confirmed by a bipartisan vote of the Senate last week. Vice President Mike Pence administered the Oath of Office.
"Our enemies will take note: Gina is tough," President Trump said yesterday. "Gina played a crucial role in our fight against al Qaeda. Her first day in the job at the CIA's Counterterrorism Center was September 11th, 2001. And she tirelessly hunted terrorists for the next three years."
"You have placed enormous trust in CIA throughout your presidency," Director Haspel told President Trump. "And the men and women of CIA do not take that for granted." She added that "we must learn from the past, but we cannot dwell in the past. We must constantly learn, adjust, improve, and strive to be better."
Watch: Gina Haspel's full swearing-in ceremony
Video of the day: NASCAR at the White House
2017 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Martin Truex Jr. joined President Trump at the White House yesterday. "The entire NASCAR field spent 2017 chasing 78," the President told Truex. "Congratulations again to these great, great champions, and to all of NASCAR on yet another incredible season." Truex presented President Trump with a special gift: an exact replica of his helmet.
Watch President Trump congratulate NASCAR Champion Martin Truex Jr.
                                                        Asham vote in Venezuela
"Venezuela's election was a sham-neither free nor fair," Vice President Pence said in a statement yesterday. "The illegitimate result of this fake process is a further blow to the proud democratic tradition of Venezuela. Every day, thousands of Venezuelans flee brutal oppression and grinding poverty—literally voting with their feet."
The Trump Administration responded by upping its pressure on the Maduro regime. An Executive Order signed yesterday by President Trump prevents Americans from purchasing Venezuelan debt, preventing corrupt officials in Caracas from enriching themselves at the expense of Venezuela's long-suffering people. President Trump's goal is the restoration of true democracy.

Gina Haspel Sworn in As CIA Director

The White House to you
Tuesday, May 22, 2018

Gina Haspel Sworn in As CIA Director
“President Trump praised CIA director Gina Haspel at her swearing-in ceremony Monday by saying ‘no one in this country is better qualified’ for the role,” Alex Pappas reports for Fox News. Haspel is the first woman to lead the agency, earning “emphatic support from GOP lawmakers as well as intelligence community members from both Democratic and Republican administrations.”
------------
“Vice President Pence on Monday called Venezuela’s recent election, which saw President Nicolás Maduro win a second term, a sham,” Luis Sanchez writes in The Hill. “The United States will not sit idly by as Venezuela crumbles and the misery of their brave people continues. America stands against dictatorship and with the people of Venezuela,” Vice President Pence said.
------------
In Fox News, U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman writes that liberal media outlets are “desperate for a narrative to discredit the president’s decision to move our embassy to Jerusalem.” Referring to Israel’s self-defense against Hamas, Ambassador Friedman explains that “no nation in the world allows foreigners to storm its border. Period.”
